During coin exhibitions. Are they for display purposes only or are the people there ready to sell their coins as well.
I will be attending my first one this weekend and decided to ask the question on the forum.
Do exhibiters sell for less in person than in store or online ?

Dont think you will buy coin at half price if you're not going to pay you can be disapointed. As this is coin dealer that put table in coins show you pay more because it cost more to them buying space to sell...

hi laser
as I just attended my first coin show in vancouver I was a little disappointed. It offers nothing for the novice or beginner . No books , folders, albums to buy.Nothing like that.Mostly just a bunch of tables with over priced coins..:(
No one even had a copy of Charltons..

The annual RCNA shows are great for beginners and up. When I used to put on shows, there was always something for everyone. At the very least there should be exhibits (maybe this is what laser is referring to) for people to look at and become educated with the subject that particular display has presented. A lot of shows can definitely be daunting for the beginner though.

Best show for begginers in Canada is NUPHILEX in Montreal (next one is by the end of October).

In MY experience - coins in shows are not over-priced. They are fair priced and you can always negotiate with the dealer.

I am not a dealer - I am a collector. That said, I have to say that us collectors and sellers want to make a good deal - buy cheap and sell high. It rarely happens. What usually happens is buying fair and selling fair. The exception is when you are a specialist: then you are capable to spot something that the dealer did not see and buy really cheap (as I did many many many times).

Now replying the original question: many collectors exhibit with the intent to showcase and sell - it does not harm if you ask. You can do it upfront because the exhibit is independent from the bourse. I exhibited my coins a few times and received offers for all the exhibit and for one or another coin - hard to explain that they are not for sale because people are used to the trade. I have friends who NEVER took their exhibits back home - they prepare them to sell (usually doing a good deal - because those lots are hard to put together and document)

gord,
To bad your first coin show wasn't better for you but with the more knowledge you obtain about different coins the better the coin show will become. Your right about there really isn't to much for the beginners most sellers are there to sell there coins they all wait for the shows to sell the better stuff they have gathered since the last show they attended. You have to sit down and go through all the boxes of coins that each dealer has behind them that's where you find the treasures (cherry picking) teach your self how to grade coins through courses. I like to look through all the graded coins MS-64 sometimes you will find miss graded coins that will grade MS-65's. Most dealers use the Canadian Coin News trends for pricing I hope all this helps you in your next coin show visit.

thanks papel
yes I wanted to look through the boxes behind the dealers but most had a person already in them and sometimes for an hour.Im not complaining. I did enjoy myself ...guess I just had a more "retail' image in my head.
Built it up too much maybe
