I was forwarded this auction and thought it would be worthwhile posting here. http://cgi.ebay.com/1796-DRAPED-BUS...GS_W0QQitemZ330362272123

I'm no expert on these by any means, so maybe you can help me out and others by pointing out what's raising the red flags. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on these--but it's a cheap knockoff all the same. It was pointed out to me that the position of LIBERTY to the bust was wrong, and probably countless other things. I'd never buy one of these without being really familiar with the details of the coin--so I don't have to "authenticate" the slab

Looks wrong to me! Pictures are pretty bad for people to be bidding that crazy! Another reason I avoid slabs! These people are bidding on the slab.

Red flags are all over this auction and none of them concern the diagnostics of the coin in the slab.

#1 - This coin offered in an ebay auction. It happens, but when I see a high value offering on ebay, my radar goes way up!
#2 - No return policy - RUN AWAY!
#3 - Slab diagnostics. On genuine PCGS slabs the bar code is crisp and clear (hard to diagnose from the seller's picture). And the "sonic seal" points on the slab are not there. See highlighted pic below. The sonic seal points (four of them are just barely visible on this genuine slab... they are more noticeable from an angle)

Current bid is at 6800+

Anyone buying this sort of coin should know full well how to instantly ID them. This coin would not pass against someone in the active buying market. My money is the high bidder is either a shill or knowledgeable collectors are just bidding it to the moon to kill the auction.

I honestly wouldn't be too worried even if it runs it course.

I sure hope so too...seeing that bidder IDs are now hidden, and ebay is not acting on numerous complaints.

I imagine the seller was a tad disappointed.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of this:

Use the link for reporting ebay auctions found here at Coin Community It's the link directly below this forum.

I have reported a couple dozen coins using that link, and ebay has acted on every single one. Including this one, which I reported on the afternoon of the 25th.

My girl Heidi, knocked it out again.

My report...

This slab is a Chinese fake. Pictures of the real slab, same
serial number, from Heritage are here...

Thanks!

Thanks for reporting listing 330362272123 to us.

I investigated this listing and confirmed that it violated our Selling
Currency policy. As a result, I removed the listing.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping
ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

Sincerely,

Heidi

Does anyone remember who the seller was? This would be good info now that the listing is gone.

I believe it was eyekrasyisu, which no longer comes up as a user I.D. so he may have been NARU'd. From a google search that brought up a different conversation on another forum, he apparently listed it a 2nd time which also got pulled.

Edited: Do we have auto-word-replacement in replies now? I.D. (minus the .'s) was being replaced with I'd..

Ack. Yeah, occasionally I see things and try to automagically clean up common spelling mistakes. I forgot about that usage though. It's removed.
