Thank you for bringing this up I went back over my painted coins and I found 2 of the painted one's with the rarer 2 (not the counter sunk one's). I had 9 rolls = 91 painted coins

I'm lucky - I bought one roll on Friday. There were only four colourised quarters, but one of them was the rarer second variety. Thanks to those who noticed this variety and mentioned it on here!

It has been noted that here are at least different die's used to mint this coin or more.
1) the non-painted coin with 2 lines on the maple leaf non-counter sunk 2.
2) the painted coin with counter sunk 2 and 1 lined maple leaf.
3) the painted coin with non-counter sunk 2 and 1 lined maple leaf.
i have 1 coin from Petro Can and it looks like the #3 in the list. Maybe they used left over minted coins for Petro Can in the rolls they look the same as the Petro Can one's?

Can you elaborate on the 'lined maple leaf' differences?
I beleive my Petro Can has the counter sunk2, interestingly the colonial acres one they have a picture of the non-counter sunk.

Yes, you're right...it looks like the "regular 2" variety to me. Maybe someone should fire off an e-mail to them to alert them to this, lest people expect that this is the coin they will get.

If you look at the outer edge of the maple leaf on the 2 different painted coins you will see 1 line for the edge of the leaf. Now look at the edge of the non-painted coin and you will see a double edged maple leaf.
this was pointed out on another coin discussion web site I'll post picture's

Holy cow, this means something different, does it not? It appears that the "regular 2" comes in a "double-edged maple leaf" and a "regular maple leaf"; the former are not painted, but the latter are.

The "countersunk 2" only comes in a "regular maple leaf" and is always painted.

Sooo...instead of 2 varieties, there are actually 3!

I picked up three rolls this afternoon; roll 1 had 4 colourized coins; roll 2 had 13 colourized coins; roll 3 had 5 colourized coins. Roll 2 was a big surprise, with 2 colourized regular 2's with regular maple leafs.

To summarize:

Regular 2 / double edged maple leaf - not colourized
Regular 2 / regular maple leaf - colourized
Countersunk 2 / regular maple leaf - colourized

The hunt continues. Is there a Countersunk 2 double-edged maple leaf out there?
Is it colourized, or uncolourized?

I e-mailed Bret Evans, editor of the Canadian Coin News, about this.

He replies that three different masters were used to make the dies, but has not yet heard from the Mint what really happened for varieties to be created.

Hi

Papeldog ask : How many painted rare one's to normal are you finding?

On 549 colorized coins =

Conter sunk 2 = 512

Same as regular = 37 or 7.2%

7.2% of 3,000,000 = 216,000 possible

Update for these three forums :

Coin community forum

On 262 colorized coins =

Contersunk 2 = 253

Same as regular 2 = 9 or 3.4%

Canadian coins forum

On 298 colorized coins =

Contersunk 2 = 289

Same as regular 2 = 9 or 3%

Numicanada forum

On 915 colorized coins =

Contersunk 2 = 855

Same as regular 2 = 60 or 6.5%

Total for three forums

On 1475 colorized coins =

Contersunk 2 = 1397

Same as regular 2 = 78 or 5.2%

5.2% of 3,000,000 = 156,000 possible
