I love it! It is the prettiest coin I have seen for a while. No kidding. I really like it.

I have a feeling those 2010 proofs are going to be very attractive.
We can only wait and see.....

I like it, it is not the best design I have seen. I think it will look better to see in real life though.

Wish they would have went back to the wheat back for a while...

I sort of like it, but it is hard to tell what it will look like on the coin. I like that they picked up the shield motif from the Indian Head cent.

I wanted the eagle or the shield with the feather-pen and sword on the reverse. But the design they chose isn't that bad...it's definitely the lesser of two evils. The flag design that I thought they originally selected was horrible. But I think this design will look much nicer when on the coin.

I don't care for the drawing but I think once I see a coin it may look better. I also would have liked to have seen wheat stalks incorporated into the new design.

I second the Wheat cent design that was turned down because it somewhat resembled an old German design. Not really thrilled with this design....I think they could have done better!

It could have been better. It could have been worse. Like I said in the other thread, I agree that it may look better in hand. I will wait until I see the actual coin to make a judgment. But honestly, the design is growing on me.

I hate it. If they're going to return to 19th century coin design they should start with the obverse. Enough "dead Presidents", I want anything other than elected politicians. I doubt it will be around long. Zinc was recently at $2 per pound (before the crash), so $4.4 per kilo or 0.44 cents per penny. Add a little copper, and the 15% inflation we're going to be having in a few years should melt them within about 10 or 15 years. Zinc price chart: http://www.kitcometals.com/charts/z...l_large.html

Quote: Enough "dead Presidents", I want anything other than elected politicians. There are other subjects to explore. Or bring back Liberty on coins...there were some very nice examples in the 19th- early 20th C.

I guess if I hadn't seen France's coins, I'd be more satisfied with the US ones. But a Republic should have the symbols of the state on its coins, not the King or Queen's.

"Boring", in a word.
Maybe it will look better in hand, with the shield done in a heraldic fashion, where there is differentiation made in the vertical strips so one knows they were alternating red and white in color. If so, that might make it pretty spectacular, especially in mint state.
The design is so simplistic, it looks almost cartoony, but maybe it's because what we're looking at is basically a drawing. However, there were many much more spectacular designs, it is surprising they didn't go with one of them.
