I am from Canada and a collector of Canadian coins. My main interest is 1¢ 5¢ and 10¢ but as I look at my desk there are 4 silver dollars and 3 50¢ pieces. I also have a ton(figuratively not literally) of RCM collector products. If any forum members need help with Canadian coins I am always glad to help. Bill

I'm a Canadian collector of Canadian coins (and paper), although I'm just getting back into it after years away from the hobby. I've never been good at all as far as being able to grade coins on my own (but I can't say I've dedicated time to learning, though I'd like to one day), so I guess I'm not really a knowledgeable collector - right now it's about aesthetics for me, but I do reserve the right to learn more down the road. :-)
Since jumping back in, I've been doing a lot of catching up with Royal Cdn Mint products almost exclusively. Last year a good chunk of my circulating coins were stolen (a binder each of quarters and nickels, which were the bulk of my collection), so I have to start over there, and plan to.
I actually find Canadian currency to be almost as fascinating, particularly what I consider "works of art", such as the 1937 issues, as well as the 1954's.
For me, the downside (both coin & paper) is simply the *overwhelming* scope of what can be collected - that was what led me to step away from it in the late '90's. I like to be a completist when I collect, and that's a pretty lofty goal with this hobby. :-) So why did I start up again? Dunno, maybe I'm an optimist. :-)

I have always liked and admired the coins of Canada. Having just visited Toronto in June, I did check change and also visited one of the coin stores and bought the 2006 Proof Set, and various Loon and commemorative dollars and quarters. Canada also has a link with Australian coins as some of the 1981 Australian 20 cents and 5 cents were minted at RCM Winnipeg. Wayne

I also love the wildlife depicted on Canadian coins. I have a bunch and Terry (crystalk64) turned me on to the specimin sets. I bought three sets and think they are all stunning coins. Dealing with the RCM is a great experience. I get regular mailings and their service is stellar. Mike so, count me in!!!!!!

Hi Andrew, What is the story with your circulating 50 cent coin? When I was in Toronto in June, I did not see a single circulating 50 cent coin. I was given plenty of 25 cent coins but not one 50c. I notice the mintages are rather low also. Doesn't the population like them or something? Wayne

Wayne The current 50 cent peice was, to my knowledge, minted for only a short period as a commemorative coin, but I"m unsure of the reason. Many people snatched them up as a collectors item and are reluctant to put them back into circulation. We had a 50 cent peice previous to this, that was taken out of circulation a number of years ago, not quite sure of the date. Sorry I can't be of more help. If you are looking to collect a 50 cent peice, I'm sure someone on this website would be more than happy to assist you! Cheers M

Well scoutjim, I- "Ole Dewey" have collected Canadian and in fact I just listed an upper Canadian Bank token Half Penny on ebay dated 1850- a real beauty- and I'll be darned if today's CoinWorld didn't have a special feature on this coin. I listed it too cheap-hoping for some action- It has a few days to go. I think some of those are real rarities. Also I listed a New Brunswick- and it is not because I don't like them- It is because I had some duplicates. I think one of my favorite Canadian coins is the Tombac 5 cent piece of 1943- Why" because it is WW11 vintage- and the coin has a special message on it- in Int'l Morse code- the message says, "We win when we work together willing=I think that is the correct wording--anyway, I have several of those in the bronze-and also in the steel. 44's and 45's.. So yes, here is a collector who does like Canadian coinage- My weakness is that I like too many. Dewey

well, we still do mint them, but mostly they are for specimen sets and special issues. They are snatched up pretty quick too. Living here, I have never seen one in circulation.

ya you got the wording almost right: we win when we work willing ly hows that for an alliteration?
