schmidty Pillar of the Community United States 677 Posts	Posted 01/16/2010 7:25 pm I have an oppourtunity to buy a 1897 Russian ruble for $25. I don't have a 19th century Krause, so I am looking for help. Is that a good price? I have no grading skills, but he grades it as VF. Judging by the price for early 1900's rubles, $20 is a steal. But, I have no idea if those values are typical for the entire series. Here is a link to CCF member gxseries's website. He has the same coin I am looking at. http://www.gxseries.com/numis/rus_i....htm#group21 The one I am looking would grade better IMO. There is more detail in his beard and hair, and the edges aren't as worn. Also, the shield on the reverse has much better detail. One last question...are these coins known to have fakes? It seems to have too much circulation wear to be a fake, but... I'll work on getting pictures of it to post, if needed. But, really, all I need is a price range. Thanks for any help! svslav Pillar of the Community United States 2605 Posts	Posted 01/16/2010 7:41 pm 1897 ruble with MM 2 stars on the rim: F 12, VF 25, XF 60. 1897 ruble w/o MM: F 12, VF 25, XF 65. In the condition you talk about MM doesn't matter, and it is exactly the book price. As for the forgery issue, does it look and feel silver? Report this Post to the Staff

If I were you I would go for it - unless someone claims it to be a fake. I am not qualified to have an opinion on that issue myself. Report this Post to the Staff
