Over here commemorative 2 pound coins are quite hard to find , some of the older ones were released in large numbers and are not hard to find if you do a bit of roll hunting but more recent ones have had lower mintages making them much sought after coins especially those minted in 2011 & 2012

What year was the commemorative 2 pound coin your friend got minted ? Or do you remember what was on the reverse?

Found a 2004 50 pence from Gibraltar today.

Subject of the coin is Tercentenary 1704-2004.

Reverse shows HMS Victory sailing past Gibraltar with a date of 1704 - 2004 and the words Battle of Trafalgar 1805.

Not really sure, suspect either Wilkinson's or Aldi. What I normally do is spend coins or notes that I have looked through and put any new coins in another pocket to look through later on.

Over the weekend I was helping out at a model railway show, selling things and taking money. I scored one addition to my collection - a 1999 Isle of Man 50p:

Other than that I saved a nice 2012 Dickens £2 and four 2011 Olympic 50p's - Equestrian, Volleyball, Swimming and Rowing. I noticed lots of BU 2012 10p and 20p coins. Surprisingly only one fake £1 - a Northern Ireland 2006 Egyptian Arch type - wrong colour and fuzzy details. Most things were priced to nearest 50p so got very few 1p or 2p coins. Chris Salmon banknotes are now getting quite common, but I was surprised at how many Merlyn Lowther £10 notes are still around.

Oh wow ! That is a nice find.

regarding fakes - I have also seen very few fakes in the past 4 months its unbelievable ! Has the govt mysteriously zapped out most of them ?

Interesting observation regarding 10 pound notes , are the Merlyn Lowther £10 notes the ones with Charles Dickens on the back?

Hi DaytR

Merlyn Lowther was in office when the design changed from Dickens to Darwin - all the notes I saw were Darwin ones. The Dickens ones were withdrawn in 2003 although they can still be exchanged at the Bank of England.

Thanks for the links Rob ! , after digging around this afternoon I found a Merlyn Lowther note with Dickens on the back that I got in the change in 2010 ! Its amazing that you are still seeing them around

I got a 2004 Gibraltar 2 pence coin today part of their 300th Anniversary release for that year.

Interesting stuff Kena , after seeing your pictures at the beginning of the thread I guess you now have some interesting 2p coins

I got a Olympics 50p this afternoon , the athletics one. It was still a bit shiny and was probably kept by someone for a while before being spent
