A batch of 100 50p coins was very disappointing with just one 'Tom Kitten' commemorative!
At least you had one nice find!

The only unusual thing about this coin was how long it's taken me to get one in change this year. The 1971 penny is the COMMONEST UK coin ever minted. From February 14, 1971 until late Summer 1973 EVERY penny in circulation in the UK was dated 1971 - and they were far more used and had much more spending power then than now!

Two days ago I got the first 1971 penny that I've actually had in change this year!

I've actually had four in a £1 bag I got from a bank, so they are by no means scarce, but I would have expected more in change by now - last year I remember getting three in change over two weeks. Maybe I'm using cards more.

I wonder if the mint is withdrawing them? The copper content on the early issues is now worth more than the face value on both 1ps and 2ps. Easy to separate the bronze from the later steel clad ones with a magnet...?

If not the Mint, someone else.

I think this is my second fake bimetallic pound coin found in change - or else it's just extremely worn!

Sorry, Hondo, will weigh it. My house has been a bit of a mess as I've had to clear out two rooms to have the carpets replaced, and I had to move some of my coins to a temporary place. I am gradually getting things back to normal now.

My scales only go to one decimal place, but according to them it weighs the same as a normal bimetallic pound coin. It's also slightly magnetic, which is the same as normal ones.

Since I started collecting coins as a very young kid in the late 1960s, 2024 is the first year when I have never found a single British coin with that year's date in circulation or available for face value. (In 1972 the only coin issued outside proof sets was the Royal Silver Wedding Crown, but that WAS available at face value, 25 pence, from banks).

Interesting. Thank you for sharing that.

I gave up collecting from change during the pandemic, but when my son took a job this year that earned tips, I started to look through them with him.

Following my hospital appointment on January 21, I am now walking slowly and carefully with a stick, and with the help of a friend I got some bags of coins from my local bank to check through - £200 in £2 coins, £150 in 50p coins (all they could spare) and £100 in £1 coins!

Results:

£2 coins - nothing really exciting. Found the following commemoratives: 2003 DNA, 2006 Brunel x 2, 2007 Abolition of Slavery x 2, 2014 Lord Kitchener, 2016 WW1 and 2016 Shakespeare History. Nothing post-2016 and no Britannia reverse definitive coins.

£1 coins - nothing exciting at all, most recent coins were dated 2020.

50p coins - a bit more interesting. Found my first three 2020 shield reverse coins (over 4 years late!) About 20 commemoratives including a scarce 2003 Suffragettes and a 2011 Olympic Games tennis. Most recent coins were 2022 Platinum Jubilee and 2022 Charles III with the cruciform shields.
