Ok. Here is a GREAT LOOKING, rose-toned 1879-S Morgan. I'm not too sure about VAMs for this year as we don't own a VAM book yet and I've seen TONS of so-called VAMs for this year of Morgans.

Here is what we are seeing:

Notice the "S" mintmark. The top serif is split, which makes me believe a VAM 15 (the S/S) could be present. Any thoughts?

And just for show and tell, here's the rest of the coin:

hmm, there are so many s/s for this series its hard to tell the difference, but it looks like maybe its a VAM-37 but I cant really tell but its definately not a VAM-15, the VAM-15 would have a doubled 1 and 8 also on the obverse and the s/s looks entirely different

Seems to be a VAM 13 to me. Is the 9 open, or closed?

Getting2getheragain asked me to take a look at the coin.

I know very little about Morgans except to say that I own a few and think they are attractive. The coin posted is attractive!

While I know nothing about VAM's, I had a friend take a look and he thought it might be a VAM 13.

Sorry I wasn't more help, but I did enjoy looking at the coin.

What is the difference in a close 9 and an open 9?

Can you post a picture to show me the difference?

I swear I don't see how it could be a VAM-13 by the photos in the book but if ya'll say thats what it is then I guess so. here are the pictures from the book of the VAM-13 and the VAM-37 (which I think looks more like the MM on his coin)

When I comment on photos that are relatively unclear, remember that I'm 47 years old and have been sitting in front of a monitor for twenty years.

I distinctly saw the doubled front serif of the mintmark, and discounted the interior line because of the variation in fills even within a specific die run. So much for my eyesight.

I'll belatedly get on board the VAM 37 bandwagon, if it resembles Bryan's pic that closely.
