Within the same Numismatics Column was a brief article celebrating the mailing of Eisenhower proof dollars beginning on October 14, 1971. The release date coincided with Ike's birth date (Denison, Texas - 1890). . .Mint Director Mrs. Mary Brooks said the demand for this "highly polished, jewel-like specimen" was unprecedented, the Mint having received orders for about 4.5 million. Mrs. Brooks went on to say Quote: "and I want everyone who has ordered one of the proof coins to receive a rare example of our proof coinage-- especially the Eisenhower dollar coin because it is the first dollar coin to be produced since 1935."
