Thanks for your lengthy and thoughtful reply, Earle. I learned a few things from that. And I will conclude with all due respect to others who may not share my prejudices, "to each their own." Win or lose, own what you choose, and be happy that we live in a free country with so many choices and opportunities available. It may not always be so.

Here is the disclaimer included on sales pages by Moonlight Mint: Quote:NOTE: Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes. By purchasing one or more of these, the buyer agrees to provide full disclosure of their origin when reselling them. Failure to provide potential buyers with complete and accurate information when offering these could result in criminal and/or civil fraud charges. In other words, don't try to sell to unaware buyers as original coins of this date. Do not attempt to use these as legal tender. I hope nothing I said came across as anything in the spirit of sharing and friendly conversation? I was just trying to share what I have learned myself over the years when I started looking into the matter. I believe, if memory serves, after I got my first Carr overstrikes someone on this forum was asking the same things about the legality so I did some heavy homework to figure it all out. I was just trying to share that in the thread so others with similar thoughts could know the legalities. As you said, to each his own and we are fortunate to live in this free country to be able to enjoy what we personally want to. Hobbies are about our own personal FUN. And if we start to listen to others telling us what our own ideas of fun should be, then we have defeated the purpose of our hobby. I say whatever a person likes to collect, then good for them! This is coming from someone who collects worthless RR date nails!

I won't post anymore pics here, b/c I don't want to hijack the thread, but I used to have fun walking away from the car on RR tracks and hunting insulators. On the way back to the car out came two hammers and it was time to hunt date nails. Those were fun and very good days. The hobby killed itself b/c people were collecting by RR line. What was rare first brought in a lot of money. Then they found out that what was rare on one line was not rare on another (a few exceptions) and so, of course, unscrupulous people started to take advantage of it and lied about where they found specific nails to get higher prices. I have a copy of the last price guide (1976). If you do an online search for date nail you can find there are still some people actively involved and quite a few books online for free download now. @Winterhawk: Amazing Ike!

I posted this clipped IKE earlier on other forum, but thought it would fit nicely here as well.

It baffles me how that oddly struck Ike would have gotten out into the wild. It certainly would not fit in a bank roll. Pardon my cluelessness regarding errors.. it is not an area that I focus on at all.
