Hi everybody. I need help trying to figure out what type of error my 1980 P Quarter has. I have never saw anything like this in my life. It has a front and a back and everything is visible. The side of the coin is missing the ridges. When you hold it on the side it looks like two coins have been pressed together. It has a score all the way around the side. I swear it looks to me like two different blank coins were stuck together. It's the same roundness as a normal quarter. I need help on this bad. Can somebody please help me out. I have tried to do some research on the internet but can't find anything at all. Thank you so much. Justin

Yeah it looks like it has been scored with a machine or something. It's a perfect cut all the way around the coin. That's why I thought it was two blank coins stuck together on accident. This coin is crazy. It doesn't have the ridges around the rim like a normal coin has. It's just smooth and has the cut down the middle.

When you line it up with another quarter, is it slightly smaller? If so, someone altered the coin, shaved it down, machined it, etc.

Pictures would help with this one. Here is what I think you have. A coin missing the reeding (what you call ridges) is common and is damage. You find this alot in halves. Collectors usually refer to these as slot machine coins but it can also come from constant use in vending machines. The rolling of the coin in the machines removes the reeding. Think about a quarter that is constantly being used at a car wash station going back and forth between the change machine and the washing stations. This is just one example. I would think the line around the edge is also damage but I would need to see a picture to be sure.

So there is a circular groove running all the way around the middle of the edge of the coin? Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I found one too but, I checked the size with a standard quarter and found it to be the exact same size down to a 1000th of an inch. Mine don't have any sign that the ribs were ever put on and no sign of being machined.

I have a quarter that is similar to this description. Mine, however, is not missing the reeding. It has two sets of reeding that are not exactly aligned. It does not appear to be two quarters glued because a stack of two is noticeably taller. It definitely weights more than a single quarter. I have pictures and will try to upload.
