Ain't that something...all the bids from $175 up appear to be bogus. Hope someone gets to the bottom of the situation.
For what it's worth, I like the newer picture better.

Quote:The bad guys are ruining ebay very quickly. Ridiculous. ebay is not perfect but for individuals with normal common sense 98% (or better) of transactions go through without a hitch. I bet even the seller discussed here, bad taste in his mouth and all, will tell you that. |

I just hope this didnt give the seller an impression of CCF as a nasty place, because generally, its a very nice place. I do think that the date looked weird from the photos, but its a stretch to call it a counterfeit from that and even more of a stretch to accuse the seller of being dishonest.

I did ask coincrazed if he thought someone would alter a $2 or $3 merc and make into a $210 one. I was serious about the question, but he never gave an answer.

Yes-this was a first for me: someone running-up the price! ebay has fundamentally changed the way many people buy & sell coins. Buying is great; and selling (this situation aside) is a good way to de-access the odd, curious, and stuff hard-to-sell at shows. Around here, there is at least one show/week within 75 mile radius. Coins become "show weary" after a while, so ebay is good for that, too. I believe that what was perpetrated on me was an abberation, and ebay is conducting an investigation of it. Take advantage of what is offered to you for free: namely, logging onto the H and S sites, as well as the guys who sold Dan H.'s Large Cents. Use their Auction Archives to form facts from opinions, or just to do basic homework on pricing, etc. And, Notice Things: how many of you can pickout the 1878 and 1921 Morgans from a mixed pile sunnyside down? That way, no one should confuse a date-altered coin from one not so. |

I like this place! I was tipped-off to the thread by someone (thanks you know who you are). A lot to learn here. I shouldn't have made a blanket "idiot" accusation vs. most everyone here, so for that I apologize. I know my way around counterfeits (legit and not). Has anyone else seen a couple of Dental Cast (fake) Large Cents in WELL-Respected 3PG holders... ?

Glad to see you may stick around petcatchris. Any open forum is going to have a few jerks reading it that will do something like create a fake account to ruin your auction, but for the most part people here are nice and knowledgeable. I agree with your point about doing a little research before posting something. When I saw this thread I did a google search on 1921D Mercs and saw a few pictures with the strange 1 like yours had. Seeing that and not being a Merc expert I decided that I'd not say anything since I honestly couldn't tell if it was real or not. Speculation is fine when money isn't on the line, but in cases like this it is best not to weigh in unless you have some real expertise on the subject.

We've had a lot of counterfeit discussions on ebay offerings of non-21 dates with 21 reverses. One of the main goals here is to educate and help our members avoid mistakes. This thread has already gone far to educate the masses. Stick around petcatchris. Seems you have much to offer in that regard.  |

That 1921 looked suspect to me also, but I'm no expert. Uh, some elucidation on which 'different hub was used' and what has been inaccurately dissected here would be great! Welcome, petcatchris, I hope what transpired here helped you dodge a bullet in the suspicious bidding. You have some interesting auctions..... I'll be back.... |

Patience, dude. I thought that was a rhetorical question. Plus,I don't spend ten hours perched on this forum, so I don't have time to post a lot. You need not get sore about it. Yes, I do think someone would take a $2 mercury and turn it into a $200 one. I did an experiment one time to see how hard it was to alter a 1944D cent into a 1914D with a razor blade, and with a little amount of time, I was able to make a convincing one. I am not a fraud , so I just mutilated the coin with the razor. It is possible. Don't get sore. - coincrazed |
