Hi Lax

Its hard to tell about if the color on the coin is toning, it looks more like circulation, dirt and grime in the pic,,

F to VF on the grade.

some silver coins tone gold, and it is very desireable.

I would say it is toned, although not in the way that many would percieve it if you were to describe it as such. In my opinion, I would say it is more of a circulated patina than a toning.

I'd have to say chemical weathering and dirt, the coin might have been left in silver reactant chemicals which like Manganese(IV)Oxide (from SAC's) will react with the air to discolour it leaving a darkened black finish, might be the same in your case just using different chemicals.

But I know its not toning, It may just be the scanner.

I think its dirt and toning, because I have a dollar that toned exactly like that on the obverse, only a litle lighter, with target toning on the reverse. maybe I'm wrong, its hard to tell from the scan.

Where'd you get the coin? Sometimes when coins are in the bargain boxes they've been cleaned.

It was from my dads grandma. It was in a little pouch along with some foreign coins.
Rest in Peace

My guess would be that the coin was in circulation quite a while, was put away with normal grit and grime and toned this way because of the condition when it was stashed in the pouch. VF20 Mike

I'd say electroplating, or grime from other coins were taken in.
