How subtle is this? I've looked at Charlton and I can barely see the difference there. I have about a half roll of these from my first box of nickles and would like to be able to determine if they are high/low but I'm afraid I don't have the proper eye to do so.

I think its noticeable to the naked eye. But if you can't see it, then compare a bunch of them side-by-side, I'm sure you'll begin to see it.

The tops of the sevens - second 7 is higher than first. HIGH -  The tops of the sevens are pretty much on the same line on the low LOW  Edited by pennylover1010

It is definitely noticeable with the naked eye. Just spend a bit of time with a few and you'll be able to differentiate.

Thanks pennylover, I see it clearly with the picture you posted. Is it just as easy to distinguish between the 1996 nickle near/far 6 ?

What do you think of this? I suspect the coin on the left is a high 7 and the other is a low 7. However I scanned them on a bit of a tilt. What does everyone else think?  |

Ugly has it right. High Low.
The 96 is tougher. I don't know of any other way to distinguish other than having both examples. The 6 is fairly tight on the near but that is of no help. Sorry.

Honestly, I was just guessing on both of those, and really appreciated everyone's input. The only variety I've been able to easily identify is the 1947 maple leaf penny, and 1983 beads. I almost go blind every time I examine my 1985 pennies with a magnifying glass.

a die chip is not an error. But what ever...........who am I to say the 1958 Dot 50 cents is just a chip? Error means MISTAKE!! not die life

Is there a list of coins that are known to have a specific error - such as the 1996 nickle from Castor above? Sometimes my eyes get strained and I may go through the rolls a bit quicker than I should as a result. Perhaps it would help at this point if I had something specific to look for on various dates.
