I have come across 4 1977 nickels and 3 1996 nickels while hunting through rolls. Using a x5 Magnifying glass only, I cannot tell the difference between them. They all look the same... more so for the 1996 than the 1977.

If they look the same they might be the same. The photos in this thread are good reference.

That's what I figure. But I can't trust my eyes anymore. I am picking of a 30X loupe (finally) to get a better look. 5X magnifying glass is not working for me.

I found another 1977 nickel. This one is high. My total so far is 3 high and 2 low.
