I am having a bit of a go on the grade and value of an overdate 6d. Coinage of England especially the hammered coins are not my area of expertise.

The coin is a 1577 type 4 Elizabeth I 6 pence with a clear 7/6 overdate die.

The coin weighs only 2.6 grams so it has been clipped. It is slightly bent and the outer row of beads was removed by the clipping. Part of the legend is not clear. Here is the coin with a blow up of the overdate.

In my opinion, this coin grades Good to Very Good at the very best when you use English standards of grading. I net downgraded it to Good for pricing but then added in a 20% increase for the OD. I know the overdates are referred to as common in the literature about this series but this is the first OD I have seen. So I gave it a retail of about $45 US and offered the owner $30. I thought that was fair.

The seller thinks it is far more valuable.

Am I correct with the grade and value? Is there something about the 6d I am missing?

swamperbob- yes, you are fairly right concerning your grading. I have a couple of these as well in around the same grade, but I only paid $20 a piece. In general they are so commonly found with errors and clipped that this coin is pretty typical. So your offer seems quite fair.

Thanks - perhaps my offer was too high

swamperbob- Well I think that your offer was more of a normal price than mine. I think that I just got a really good deal.

It would probably grade at Fair/Nearly Fine over here, although there looks to be surface porosity/corrosion.
I have checked the DNW archived sales and they have only sold 3 in 12 years. The last went in October 2009 in a lot with a 1590 sixpence. The 1577 was NF and the 1590 better than Fine. Hammer price was £140 plus 17.5% premium. This makes your valuation about right for purchasing.

John.
