I got this half penny a while back, but I am not quite sure what to make of the grade since it seems that it may have had a defective or filled die. I know that there are a few varieties of this coin based upon the portholes of the ship, but this one is totally lacking a ship in the background. So what do you make of this?

Also, I know that this coin is in fact real and has a bit of corrosion and gunk around the lettering, but how would you grade this one? Thanks!

The ship on 1/2d is very small. I believe I see the trace of it. It's either wore off or the die was filled (or both).

svslav- Though I suspect that my coin may have some issues with a bit of corrosion, it seems that there really is little of the ship to be seen. Since my coin probably has VF (US grading system) details it probably has not just worn off. Any idea what kind of grade you would assign a coin with a filled die, and therefore sans ship?

I hope someone else would chime in with the grade. I'm a total dilettante when it comes to grading, let along in complicated cases.

This coin seems a solid G/G+ to my eye, if you are selling. :)
A aVG if you are buying, as experienced dealers say.
BTW; ever heard that, "ask five dealers about their opinion about the grade of a coin and you'll get six different answers" :)

molydeii- Really, you feel that the filled die and goo/ slight corrosion around the lettering takes the coin down from VF to VG (or possibly even G)? Wow, that is a bit more of a drop than I expected.
