Looked at 2 NGC 2008-S slabbed Lincoln Memorial coins on ebay. Was very surprised at the grading and difference in price.

Same dates 2008-S
1. 2008-S NGC PF69 RD Cameo $8.00
2. 2008-S NGC PF69 RD Ultra Cameo $29.00

So now I find out that NGC has two kinds of Cameos with a wide range of pricing but both are still PF69's. Should not there be a grading number difference if the prices for Cameo and Ultra Cameo are that much different. Starting to avoid slabs altogether. Need some input please. Sorry if I'm getting into salbs to much but you guys are very helpful.

Ultra Cameo coins are desired by many people and so there is a premium. Grade has nothing to do with it.

Cameo(CAM) vs Ultra Cameo/Deep Cameo(UCAM/DCAM) is just a difference in degree of contrast between fields and devices on a proof coin. Modern proofs should be DCAM as they are specifically minted that way but the strikes will degrade to CAMs towards the end of a die's life.

You guys are really good at explaining this stuff. Does PCGS have different designations for Cameo? All I've seen with them so far is DCAM. Wow, so another designation to look out for. I will go up and study the registry stuff. I thought that was only for the "Big Boys" of collecting. Never heard of a small collector like me doing registry sets. Interesting!

Thanks again. Your helpfulness is one of the reasons I became a "Supporter" of this group. So don't ever think your replies have gone for nothing.

Over the years I have noticed that most registry set collector go for deep cameo over cameo and I assume there worth more because they tend to be expert collectors imho

I myself only purchase DCAM69 slab coins due to the high ramp up in the price that PR70 command. But recently I was able to purchase my first PR70 coins both NGC slabs, one being a 2008-S Jefferson Ultra Cameo and the other a 2009-S Jefferson Ultra Cameo. The cameo on both coins was quite stunning with great contrast to the mirror backgrounds. I had to go through a lot of auctions to get those two coins at a price I could afford. Found that NGC slabs prices are a little easier on my pocketbook compared to PCGS slabs.

PCGS NGC
Cameo CAM CAM
Ultra Cameo DCAM UCAM

From an "investment" perspective, DCAM's (or UCAM's) are your best bet. If a PR68 DCAM and a PR69 CAM are the same price, best bet is the PR68 DCAM. Of course, you alwo want to look for eye appeal. Some slabbed DCAM's are really only CAM's because they've been overgraded. So on and so forth.

In modern proofs, PCGS usually commands a higher premium than NGC.

If you train yourself, you can pull PR69 coins from proof sets and save yourself a lot of money by not having to pay slab prices.

My one other question has not been answered yet. Does PCGS have a difference in Cameos like NCG. All of my PCGS's (11) read DCAM. As for pulling the good stuff from Proof Sets, I only buy two sets a year and those are the Silver and Clad. I only buy the clad because my wife's bank sells them to customers for below Mint costs. Usually $25 each. Except last year when I bought over 100 of the 2008 sets for $25 and sold them to dealers at shows for $40-$50. 20008's were going high then. Was that unethical!

Slabs bought recently w/prices. All are Buy it Now on ebay from sellers stores. No, I wont post sellers names here.
1994-S PCGS PR69RD DCAM -- $4.20
1997-S PCGS PR69RD DCAM -- $4.60
1985-S PCGS PR69RD DCAM -- $3.99
1996-S PCGS PR69RD DCAM -- $4.49
1999-S PCGS PR69RD DCAM -- $7.00
1960-D PCGS MS66RD SmallDate -- $5.25
2010 P & D NCG Union Shield MS65RD -- $8.25 (set of 2)

That's my recent purchases from last 2 weeks. They seem cheap enough to me and if I can continue to get them I will go with all slabs for my proofs.

Yes, PCGS does the two Cameo designations as well - Cameo and Deep Cameo. As has been said, Moderns are pretty much expected to be DCAM but the Cameo designation comes into play with many earlier Proofs. Before 1960 or so, it's the more common designation by far.

As Super Dave said and to add to that - I think all grading companies of repute (PCGS, NGC, ANACS and maybe ICG) have the folowing:
a PR (PF for NGC) grade
a PR (PF for NGC) CAM grade
a PR (PF for NGC) DCAM (for PCGS) or UCAM (for NGC).

You seem to be looking at and buying recent year coins. That's why you're only seeing the "Ultra" Cameo designation.

If you pull a coin from a proof set dated 1991 or later, the vast majority will be CAM's (and DCAM's) and PR68 or above. Of course, this assumes the sets were properly stored, etc.

Of course, some people prefer slabs and that would be an additional cost to pay the TPG to grade them.

One I heard they stopped prematurely making the 2008 sets I saw what was going to happen. I managed to keep 10 of them for myself. I sold most sets for about $45-50 to dealers but later on was getting up to $70 each. Since I got them for $25 I made a profit of of 100-200 percent so I was happy. Probably sold about 200 sets. Bank was happy as heck to get rid of them. Even then they shipped 500 sets back to their headquarters and no one knows what happened to them. Remember trading 4 sets for one beautiful 1883CC NGC MS64 Morgan. That was my first CC Morgan. I will start a new thread later to tell you what the dealers did to those sets. Very unethical stuff.
