Thad, I feel the same way about a Twenty Cent Piece I wanted for my 7070! I did not have enough cash, but there was an ATM on site.

Some would say it was way overpriced, but I have never seen another one like it. Beautiful tone. Nicely circulated with no dings or gashes, just honest wear. It would have been my first slab as well (to be broken out, of course).

LOL! It's painful, isn't it! I'll never get that coin out of my head. I can still see the booth, the coin and the dealer in my mind. The 1936 brilliant proof is one of the most difficult Lincolns to obtain in ANY condition IMO.

This year I'm saving and saving and saving for that coin. I think the big show is in September and my plan is go there seeking another one. However, these are so tough, I'm already betting I will not find one in the entire show. .....OH THE PAIN!

Yea, bargains are bargains for a reason, the seller knows thats all they will get for it.

I dont know if I would say that. I have bought some good coins at bargain prices and sold it for more than triple what I paid. For example I was at the fun show and bought to certified 1999s Close AM cents. one was pf-68 the other pf-69. I asked the seller how much he wanted for 1 b.c I knew what they cost. he told me they sold for around 100 but he would give it to me for 30 bucks. so I said how much for both. and he said 55. So I bought them and sold the pf-68 on ebay for 300. the dealer knew they were worth more but wanted to make a sell. he was happy and so was I. But I am the kind of person that unless I really want it I want buy it. There have been times I have over paid and times I under payed. I guess it all works out in the end I do think if you sit and wait for something long enough it will find you, and sometimes you wait to late and it passes you by

I love getting a deal just as much as the next person.

I also remember that 'a coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it', and sometimes I'm that someone. I'm guilty of bidding twice book value just to get the coin I want because that is what it is worth to me.

I hate overpaying but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I have zero thoughts about selling something I buy. I will keep them all. I am fairly diligent in maintaining my focus so I haven't made a lot of buys that were outside my collection goals. But what I have left for those goals are going to cost me at least 2x book. I'm not sure why but that is what I am seeing on ebay and I'm seeing them anywhere else (although I haven't posted a want list here - though another member has a similar interest and I've seen theirs a few times with some of the same wants). FYI - it is all dark side stuff!

My thoughts .....

I shared my approach for pricing and evaluating purchases for my current collecting passion in a separate thread ....

https://goccf.com/t/66677

Contrary to the advise I gave in that thread..... there have been occasions where I had the RIGHT coin in hand and ... well ..... darn the torpedoes ..... she had to be mine.

Most recent example was the purchase of my 1935 Robinson (Arkansas) Half-Dollar. I had been looking for a coin in MS65 (OCG for this coin) ..... and had been through about 15 or so at the show when I saw the one ..... glowing blast white surfaces, full cartwheel luster and such an incredible strike that Senator Robinson hair was fully defined ... almost cameo like.

Price guide average was $346 for this coin in MS65 .... dealer wanted $400 ... so I paid him in cash and we both walked away smiling.

I'll soon forget the $54 'overpay' ...... but I can pull this coin out everyday for the rest of my life and enjoy it.

Well I guess I'm in the minority here. I hate to over pay for my coins. I have over payed and hated it so I know. Part of the fun of the hunt for me is getting a coin I really want at or below CDN bid. I spent 6 months in the hunt for a nice Oregon Trail commemorative. I set a limit of $100 in Au or better. I must have bid on 400 of these on ebay and one day I won a nice slabbed AU55 for $80. My thought is I don't plan to sell my coins but if I ever had to it would be nice to get my money back. My newest hunt is for a 1909S IHC, I'll let you all know if I ever get it.
