I agree with you neil, but they are being sold through bullion dealers. I can't imagine a 54% premium on them as you are suggesting. Sukardnam's estimate of 10% is what the current Eagles are selling for so I am hopeful that it will fall between 10% and 30% as bherring suggests.

Here is a question to discuss. Will each design be released in succession or will the entire years issues be released at the same time?

they will bring a premium thats for sure. but they are targeted more for bullion investors. if they want they would be on usmint website. Therefore I belive if the premium is to high it will eventually keep the bullion investors away and there are not enough numismatic people to buy them. Most numismatic people would rather spend 120 on a high grade coin or a key semi key date coin. not 5 ounces of silver

I heard that all 2010 issues will be released together because the start-up issues have pushed the 2010 release late into the year. Next year, the mint will release them in succession as they do with the quarter dollar series.

I'm really curious as to how many CCF members will get these. And if they'll get each one or just a couple favorites, and as to what level of collecting they'll pursue with these, etc.,etc.,etc. This is a good thread and topic....but I'd be interested to see some hard numbers ! Someone should do a POLL ! ...hint hint....

Just look at the 1/2 24k Pres. Spouse coin (all the hype at the first 4 issue and the sellout). Look at the selling rate now. I am sure that will create a scarcity in the future and become modern day gold coin rarity and 50 yrs from now (within our life time, for most of us) it will be one of the "key coin". That is my belief, however, so far, I only have 1 PF/UC set - the Jefferson Liberty - I just can't afford all of them (looking at around $6000/year just for 8 coins).
The same thing can happen to this 5oz silver coin. The early hype and then the fad fade....
Now, another head up: Platinum special serie starting this year (was put into law by Congress to commemorate the 10yrs anniversary of the serie).

Quote: Just look at the 1/2 24k Pres. Spouse coin (all the hype at the first 4 issue and the sellout). I got my Dolley Madison when it came out......and it is SUPER NICE ! But yeah, I knew that would be all I could afford......I would have liked a Martha Washington too but..... It just isn't within my income to collect that whole series.....never will be. But with this point for me, it's the same thing with the 5oz. Silvers. Spending $600.00 a year on "just" those, is not going to happen..... I have too many albums to complete with the extra money that I " do" have.......it won't go towards those. "IF" the series (5oz) does stop at the 11 year mark.....and that's an "IF", because they said it might continue on, and if the price is and remained at $125.00 for each one..... $600.00 per year for 11 years = $6,600.00I DON'T THINK SO ! ..... NOT FOR ME ! .... NOT JUST FOR A GLORIFIED GARGANTUAN SILVER QUARTER (which is basically just a commemorative or an homage to the standard Parks Qtr. really)(and in my opinion I don't think it will end up being a very good "investment tool" for silver at all......numismatically speaking though....that remains to be seen I guess) (and don't forget shipping and handling for each and every one too!)$6,600.00 will go to many other, more important things, .......such as LIFE ! .... I'm just more apt to "frown" than I am "smile" when it comes to these....I'll be "reasonably" happy to own one or two but that will be the extent of my purchasing for this series.

I wonder how many edge lettering errors will come out of the first batch. They were having technical difficulties working that out because the blanks were so thin.

Quote: They were having technical difficulties working that out because the blanks were so thin. That was the official line but it doesn't hold water. If they can't letter the edge on the 5 oz because it is too thin then they can't letter the edge on the NA and President dollars either because they are only HALF the thickness of the 5 oz coin. Last I looked the NA and President dollars DID have lettering. The last I heard though they are planning on putting edge lettering on the 5 ozers using a three piece collar instead of rolling it through an edge die like the dollar coins. (Personally I thnk they would probably do better if the increased the number of edge segments. The proof dollar coins use a one inch spring toggled collar segments, the 5 oz quarter would use 3.1 inch collar segments.

IMHO this whole thing is just silly. The mint can't even keep up with ASE demand, and that is a 'legit' coin! It's just a friggin joke... I hope they don't monetize these stupid things. I have been reading and have yet to find anything on a legal tender status for these. ? The way I look at it is that if they don't give these legal status and monetize them, like the ASE, then they are NOT coins. They fall into the same category as the silver and bronze medals, tokens, and non-monetary commems that the mint has produced/marketed for decades. None of which is considered a 'coin' to complete any sort of collection. Call it what you want, medal, token, bullion, all of the above... If it isn't given legal tender status, it isn't on MY radar.

Might as well go to the home shopping network and buy the big, fancy, 5 oz silver Morgan dollar replica. Anyone can make a coin replica in huge form. Now the mint just wants some of the snake oil profits.

Ratio411, I have to agree with your frustration on the legal tender issue of the 5 ouncer. Last I herd they were exact replicas of the park quarters making them $.25 legal tender! I still wonder, will this commemorative bullion series do to the bullion community what the State Quarters did to the coin community? This is a speculation worth our attention IMO!

The 5oz silver behemoths have a stunning legal tender status of a whole quarter dollar :-/ Thank you Congress for such a brilliant program! [sarcasm]
