I bought a Columbia 5 Centavos 1886/5 on E-Bay. I do not have a reference photo for this variety, but thought it should be a simple over-date. Do you think the coin I received is that variety?

Maybe it is the pics, but I don't see the overdate. Unfortunately, I can't find anything for comparison on the web either.

Also, this coin is not the one pictured in the ebay auction that you gave.

Thanks Snowman. I wasn't going to say anything, but I was pretty sure the pictured coin was not the coin I received. I think I'll contact the seller and see if he'll accept a return. Just after I bought this one another one came up on E-Bay from a seller I have used in the past. I went ahead and purchased that coin.

This coin has an interesting history. Shortly after it was issued Panama broke from Grand Columbia. This made this coin somewhat rare. What I really can't understand is how the Waterbury mint over-struck an 1885 coin when producing the 1886 coin since the primary business of Waterbury was planchet production. Maybe some in CCF knows the story.

Understanding the history behind the coins is actually the fun part of collecting for me. -- Terrell

I think 1886/5 in Krause means that on the master die the date 1885 was changed to 1886 leaving a faint trace of the 5 being under the 6, rather than the entire coin being overstruck.

Thanks AndyG your answer probably explains the error

Just to update, I contacted the seller that the coin did not appear to be an over-date. He refunded the coin price & shipping immediately and offered to let me keep the coin. I have returned the coin to him as I already have that date. I just wanted everyone to know this e-Bay seller was very professional and was not trying to scam anyone.

I was lucky enough to purchase another coin that really is the 1886/5 variety and thought I would share with the forum.
