Interesting Die Crack In 1953 Half Dollar

This is a small date 1953 half dollar. Has a huge die crack on one side. Look right of the hoof.

Another of the coins I found that looks cleaned when intensely blown up. I wonder if the mint didn't polish some of these as a matter of course. I can't imagine a collector doing it.

Nice Find. In a few more strikes, the die Crack(s) will deepen and part of the die will break off but will be still retained for a few more strikes..... Thus a Retained Broken Die... you will start to see that the plane of the part punched by the broken part is at a slightly different angle from the main fields of the coin.

Nice coin. Would be great for showing the progression of the die failure that pg talks about.
(and pg is probably the authority for die varieties on this coin series - so you got a comment from one of the best)

Thanks. The photo was taken with my Canon XSI, a stock lens, and a $10 close-up diopter.
