Indeed .... so I assume you have read the story behind this coin and the sordid efforts of L.W. Hoffecker to have this minted for his personal gain. Another tale of political intrigue for personal gain in this series.
For fun ...... did you also know that Mr. Hoffecker established in 1929 the so-called "Gadsden Purchase Commission" with the goal of issuing a USA half dollar ..... which passed through Congress but was vetoed by President Herbert Hoover when it reached his desk?
Mr. Hoffecker was not done yet ..... and pushed through Congress this coin .... with traditional Washington political lobbying and even a short visit with President F.D.R.
Hoffecker designed this coin himself ...... his initials can be seen at 5:00 on the reverse rim.
There are more stories of Mr. Hoffecker ..... he became President of the ANA and served as such from 1939 to 1941 .... and was also involved in the 'questionable' distribution of the Elgin Half Dollar.
You will see New Mismatist that the threads of stories weave throughout the series .... and the more you learn about the series the more you can appreciate your great gift of a collection.
A little more background to help you place this in context with the overall series ....
I will admit that Mr. Hoffecker was successful in his efforts to create a type rarity ...... this 1935 Old Spanish Trail with net mintage of 10,008 coins is one of only three 'type' coins in the entire series at 10,000 or less.
fyi .... the other two are coins you also have ....
1928 Hawaiian at 9,958 minted (you claim to have it ... but under wraps
)
1935 Hudson at 10,008 minted (great coin you showed with my comments)
Sooooo .... enough of that ... to your coin ....
I agree that the simplicity of the design is an outstanding feature of this coin .... seems that LWH got something right
..... and this coin will always be popular for the design and type rarity.
Most were well handled at the mint and sold to collectors ...... so these are not hard to find in high technical grade ..... in fact the "Optimal Collecting Grade" for these IMHO is MS-66.
You coin is a beautiful example of LWH personal greed ..... the few bag marks and scratches on the reverse will hold it back from a super-high grade ..... but I would not be surprised to see it come back at MS-66 .... the fields are absolutely gorgeous and clean.
At MS-65 Numismedia has this as a $2030 coin.
I say it was worth it to send out to a TPG.
Let us know how she comes back.
Enjoying your coins ..... but might take a break in replies to search some nickels.
