Hello, please examine these 3 coins. You will see sort of string , black line on the left side next to the lion leading in to the shield. What is it? Other coins of the same year do not have it... It is interesting as these are two different years....  Issue weight for all should be: 11.66 gr weight of above coin is: 11.58 gr
weight of another is : 11.58 gr
weight of another is : 11.57 gr.  weight of above coin is: 11.65gr
weight of another is : 11.58 gr
weight of another is : 11.57 gr. weight of above coin is: 11.71gr
weight of another is 11.58 gr
weight of another is 11.57 gr. Note: this coin contains more metal because there are additional designs on it.. Why ? There is a knob on the 6 between the hoof and top of the 6. plus there are other variations in all 3 (and others) coins. |

OK, HHB, the lines are die clash marks,the top coin is a double...the back of the kings head. If you look on the top 2 coins, you will see the kings lips on the unicorn lance. HHB, the Geo 6th 50 cent coins are my favorite. There are more varieties than you can begin to imagine. The Charleton Press has done them a dis-service in publishing the few they do. Nice coins. I hope I have given info you can use and in a way as not be be negative.......

OH yeah, to make it easier....follow the line from the lion, thru the crown to the unicorn. See the king now....if you do, you will never miss it again.....now turn coin over...look in kings ear....does he have a design in his ear? Look on the sheild for the design. Now does the king have spiked hair? Hope so!

Those are clash marks produced by dies that came together without a coin in between and the high portions of the die mark the opposite Die and will be seen on subsequent coins. In your examples the Reverse Die has been imprinted with the outline of the King's head and you are looking at the back of his head next to the lion. Reverse Clash Marks are common on this series from about 1940 up to 1946. Obverse Clash Marks can be quite spectacular resembling feathers behind the Kings Head (1940-1946) and also the Hearing Aid (in the ear) varieties for 1950-1952.

castor, nice overlay , now I can see what caused the hearing aid. You wouldn't have an overlay for the Elizabeth laureate bust would you ?
