From private individuals in person and from some coin shops, it's possible.
From ebay, ioffer, etc? Not a chance.

The one key thing to keep in mind is that people search large lots for different reasons. Whil most people are searching for dates (particularly semi-keys and keys), others search for varieties or upgrades as to condition. I can tell you that bulk lots are typically not searched too well for varieties and I've upgraded many of my coins using bulk lots. I've found many Buffalo nickel varieties in bulk lots, for example. I've found 1894 DDO Indian Head cents in bulk lots, etc.

And I also agree, nearly all of the bulk lots are searched for dates and those rare lots that have semi-key dates in them could be "salted", to get you to come back for more.
