I just picked up an incredible $120 worth of Ikes at the bank today. I've never gotten more than a couple before, so this was amazing! Anyhow, I was excited to look for the Friendly Eagle Variety (FEV) and of course the all-elusive 1972 Type 2. Out of 17 1971-D I found 2 possible FEVs, one of which is in really nice shape. I think they are right- the shape of the Gulf of Mexico is different, as are the islands and the Eagle's furrow compared to the common 71-D. I did a quick look on ebay and there are two FEVs up, $450 and another for $550, both MS graded & certified. I don't think mine are worth anywhere near that much. Anyhow, that was really a cool find! Both of mine have also the apparent Re-entry vehicle (REV) markings, which I did not know about and don't really know if that is a normal part of the FEV reverse. See http://cgi.ebay.com/PCGS-MS65-1971-...S_Individual for REV. As for 72 Type 2, didn't get any- all of mine were Type 3. As for 76 Type 1 and 2, didn't get any Philly Type 1, but Denver got 11 Type 1 (just a few are nicer) and 27 Type 2. I got no 71 P or 77P so can't even put together a circulated business strike set yet (and of course, no 73 P & D for obvious reasons). Got a few nice AU-BUs. Now, I like Ike, too Edited by mycrob 08/12/2010 1:36 pm

That's awesome! My bank never has large dollars (it barely has halves for that matter)... Never heard of the FEV variety before...

Thanks for the link daviscfad, that's exactly the site I was on to look for the FEV and should have out that in my post above. The FEV is gaining in popularity I think. It's estimated that only 500,000 FEV 1971-D were minted. If I understand right, a subset of the FEVs also have DDO or DDR (or both).

I too found 33 Ikes today at my bank. All are circulated and none are silver. Are clad Ikes worth anything more than face? I was going to deposit or use for lunch.

On ebay, people are selling 100 ikes for 130-160 range, but I don't see too many buyers. Any coin dealer will tell you to spend them as tips. Someone here on the forum might be interested in buying them slightly above face value. I think, given that they can hardly be found anymore at banks, that they should be worth a small premium over face. And nice BU examples should be worth much more than face.

I would love to find a wad of Ike's like that. Got two last week 72 P&D, first ones I have gotten in over a year. Nobis, if you had enough posts and the the proper amount of time in, I would have made an offer on your Ike's. So just do this. Spend them, but do it a two or three at a time and do it all over town. You just might get someone to take up the hobby this way. Or see what you can get on the Bay for them.

I'd heard of FEV before but never really pursued it.. I have quite a number of Ikes, hearing $450 as a price tag sure makes me want to learn more/take a look at them.
Not that I'd sell them, mind you. They came from my grandma and whether worth $450 each or $1 each makes no "real" difference---- but it would be cooler to have something worth that much even so.
