I am not sure if this belongs in the World Coin forum or the US section, so forgive me if this is in the wrong place.

Concerning Hawaiian coinage, though coinage was minted (in San Francisco) for just one year, just how long did it actually circulate in Hawaii? Also, Were many of the coins melted by the US territorial government after they were pulled out of circulation? If so, this would mean that these are far scarcer than the mintage numbers indicate.

Finally, how would you grade my quarter? I am not sure if it is a VF of an EF. Thanks!

I grade it as a solid -->

and at least EF... easy. Not familiar enough with the design/coin to know if weak strikes are common or thats a mild amount of wear. Could be a low AU, given those considerations.

ianmprice- Thanks for the input! I'm glad that you love this coin. I certainly do as well. But I must say that I doubt that this is an AU. I certainly wish that it were though!

I don't think they circulated very long. It wasn't very long afterwards that we invaded and took over the islands. (Yes I know the history books say were were invited in and they asked to become a US Territory, but the request did NOT come from the Hawaiian government, it came from US interests on the islands. The Hawaiian Queen was placed under house arrest until she made the "proper" request.)

They probably circulated briefly alongside US coinage but were fairly quickly withdrawn because it was no a US Territory. How many were melted I do not know. The figures might be found in the US Mint reports from that time period. And yes they are scarcer than the mintages indicate.
