I don't search notes from the bank, but I do check any note that I can get my hands on. I believe the oldest note I have gotten in change is a 1988-A one from a restaurant just over a year ago. I have also found $67 in star notes. I periodically check my parents' wallets as well, but that rarely turns up anything. At this point, most of my friends at school have seen me searching my cash so many times that one guy who sometimes borrows a few dollars at a time to pay for lunch recently started checking notes before paying me back. Less for me, but maybe he'll catch on. I want to start asking tellers to see the mutilation currency. Just to double check, they are allowed to exchange it, correct?

Numisma, I think it depends upon the bank -- maybe the teller. It doesn't hurt to ask. I haven't seen a small portrait $5 in a long time. Today I got this in change at the bakery. If I'm reading the serial number tables right I believe this is from the very first print run of this series and denomination. (Just one of 7 million printed that month.) I also got donuts.

Your five was printed at Fort Worth in October 1999. It was actually one of the last small head $5 bills produced.

Small portrait 5s are definitely the hardest to find, as 5 dollar bills seem to have the shortest lifespan of any denominations. I've seen a few fives from 2013 that are already looking worn out, almost as if they were in circulation for more than 2 years.

Really? I thought the small head $20s were harder. I've seen a few 2003A $5 bills lately. Even the big-head non-colorized $20s are hard to find these days. After all the colorized notes have been circulating for 12 years now.

I remember when I was a kid and it was exciting to find the colorized fives. Now it's the other way round.

True, there are some old forums over 10 years old where people are talking about being the first to get a colorized 10, now a days, the opposite would be true, that is, being able to get an uncolored or small face one from that same bank!

 That's a nice bill you've got, and it's even a star note!

Not only a star, but a quite scarce star to boot (check the CV on this).

Thanks for the replies :-) I didn't know if was a scarce note as I don't know how to check Star Notes prior to 1981, is there a site for earlier print runs?
As far as finding notes, I have a second part-time job that sometimes has me on a cash register so I get to look through a lot of bills during the week. It's probably the only thing that keeps me sane while I'm there... I've found Buffalo and War-Time Nickels, Indian Head cents, Silver Quarters... one day a woman was looking for some change and pulled out a Franklin half dollar and me being the king hearted soul that I am let her know she could use it because it was fifty-cents...
One day I jumped on a register to ring up a customer and when the drawer opened, there was a Silver Certificate sitting on top of the ones pile... I picked it up and there was another one underneath... All I could think about was, "Who was on this register before me and could there possibly have been more that they handed out as change before I got there?
These were the bills
