I just got a 1995 $1 I-E for my uncommon block letter collection at work today.

Hey not sure what part of the USA you live in Quote: A bank teller told me that they refill their ATM when it runs low, and it may include customer deposited bills rather than those from an armored car, and that's how I missed some old 20s back when I got all those 1950 10 and 5 dollar bills. In my area there is a "special" deposit into the ATM that comes in via the armored car carriers. It comes in a bag "sealed" and folks like the manger fill the ATM and they do not take cash from the drawer to fill it. IF it runs out it runs out and the ATM says "Temporarily out of service".

This is true for 5/3 bank. We get cash shipments twice a week and fill the ATM once a week. Typically with cash ordered through BRINKS. If we have to fill it early (if the ATM gets below 10k any day before fill day we have to add extra) we will take extra from the vault which is just cash from our drawers. This also happens if we cannot recycle unused cash from the ATM when we fill it up next.

Thanks for the heads up and that's good to know that 5/3 keeps recycling old bills / notes and does not "freshen" up so to say. Hope you guys at 5/3 vacuum once in a while.

I'd like to know what happened to all the uncolored big head 20s. I see 2004 bills all the time, and they're almost always worn out, but I rarely, if ever, see a 1996-2001 bill these days. But when I do see them, they're usually in really good condition. Makes me wonder what's going on if worn out 2004s are fit for circulation but 1996-2001s aren't.

As a matter of fact, I've encountered a few of these recently. With small portrait notes I set them aside, and with large portraits I try to save them but I will spend them if I need to. I currently have two in my wallet, a 96 and a 99. I just got the 96 from an ATM on Monday.

One way I could find old bills is to trade for them at work, but I usually only carry $10 in bills max and some change (in the off chance I open a roll of silver quarters), but apparently people think they're counterfeit. Most of the other clerks use the counterfeit detector pen, even though I disapprove since a bleached bill would pass the pen test with ease. And pretty much every bill that gets marked includes the following: Small portrait bills of ANY denomination Uncolored large head 20s 50 and 100 dollar bills (even though the security features on the new 100 are obvious)
If it weren't for the pen, I'd probably be reporting more bill finds from work, but nobody will take my advice. All I do when a large bill is used for payment is scratch the surface to see if it's rough, or make sure the bells in the security strip move on new 100s. But it's probably a good thing I don't trade for anything higher than $1 since I already have multiple small portrait bills for every denomination.

A guy came in yesterday and I saw a small portrait 100 in his wad of cash. I offered to break it for him since I had enough change and it turns out to be a 1990 from district 10 which is uncommon. Unfortunately after he left, one of the higher ups chewed me out for asking for change from customers even if I'd have to give them $4.99 back otherwise. Guess that means I won't be giving customers the service I want to anymore...

I had to spend the 1999 and 96 twenties. Well, I didn't have to spend the 96, but I like getting notes back so I can search them rather than spending the exact amount (otherwise I only had ones).

I once tried that same tactic of spending a larger bill on a smaller purchase to see what I would get back as change. Never again. I paid with a 5 for $2.25 ice cream last summer and both of the bills I got back were 2009s that went into the "reject" pile if they came out of a bank strap. I'd rather use a bunch of EMSed ones on a purchase rather than breaking a 20, since I can look through the coins I get back and I have a chance of hitting old bills when picked up from the bank.

I went skiing today, and saw a woman spend a small portrait 10 dollar bill. It was in pretty good condition, too, but I didn't have any money on me to trade. But when I went inside, you'll never believe this, but I found a 20 dollar bill on the floor! I'll take that over a small portrait bill any day!

Nice going with the 20! The only one I've found was a Canadian twenty on the sidewalk in Victoria.
I was going to go skiing tomorrow, but I don't think I can since I still have some homework to do.
