Non Magnetic Nickels? - Coin Community Forum

suvoth Valued Member Canada 83 Posts	Posted 08/03/2006 2:35 pm Ok, I bought a couple of rolls of nickels (to look for that 2006 no P nickel) and some of the nickels aren't magnetic!? Is silver magnetic? Why would some years be magnetic and some of the same year not be!? I have a 1987 nickel that looks kinda "smoky" isn't that what silver turns out like? I'd post a pic, but I am at work. I have 3 or 4 that feel very strange when I hold them together. They seem lighter than most. These are U.S. nickles, not Canadian though. Report this Post to the Staff
coinsnpaper Valued Member Canada 480 Posts	Posted 09/03/2006 06:26 am Nickels from 1922- 1981 were made of 100% nickel, except for the tombac issues of 1942-43, and the chromium-plated steel issues of 1944-45, and 1951-1954.the nickels from 1982-2001 were made of 75%copper-25%nickel, and the 2002- issues were made of nickel and copper platings on a steel core. The nickel issues are magnetic, the copper-nickel issues are not magnetic, and the plated steel issues are also magnetic. Report this Post to the Staff
