Hello, My first posting so a few problems attahcing photos will keep trying, but heres the info first. I have a coin dia. 32mm dated ANNO 1823 on the same side is the crest of arms and a phrase in latin. HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. On the otherside George IIII profile with a laurel crown and the following writting: GEORGIUS IIII D:G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:. Can anyone shed any light as it was found amoung the treasured items from my fathers estate. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

That would be a halfcrown (2 shillings sixpence). There were two types in 1823: the "motto" type and the "no motto" type; your one has the motto, by your description. Sadly, the "no motto" type is the scarcer of the two. Value depends on condition; in my world coin catalogue, it's listed as US$26 in Fine, US$60 in Very Fine, $250 in Extremely Fine. Post a pic, either here or in the "grading practice" part of the forum, and some of the folks here can have a guess at the grade. You should probably also get a price for it over there, in pounds, from an up-to-date copy of the Spink British catalogue. Can't help you there, I'm afraid - "1980 edition" isn't very up-to-date!
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Just for your info the motto is french HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE roughly translates in : Shame on the person that thinks ill of this It is still used in situations that could be interpreted wrongly

Ageka,'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' is commonly expressed as 'Evil to him whom evil thinks'.
Rugby7h,you have definitely got a British King George IV (1820-30) 1/2 Crown. The 1829 is the scarcest date.

It is difficult to give a real translation but " Shame on the person who has a bad thought about this" would best describe the motto
It is still used in todays french with a smile and a wink Like when a neighbour sees the mailman walk into your house when you are at work 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense'
