I'm really liking all the different Overtons everyone keeps coming up with! (And I'm doing the best I can with my Overton attributions. I really didn't care about them until this thread! Like I have no idea what any VAMs my 200+ Morgans and Peace dollars are either!) 1831 Capped Bust half dollar O-111 O-116 (R-1) Thanks AGAIN Zeewool! I do appreciate you keeping us all straight! You are making this thread awesome and I thank you!

Moe, I have not been looking for mistakes unless someone leaves a question mark or asks for help, but the reverse of your 1831 just sorta jumped out at me. It is not O-116, it is O-111 (R-1). In the shield, the stripes contain 3 lines each, but on your coin lines 2 and 3 in stripe #1 are joined and look like a big double line. This only occurs on O-109 and O-111 (same reverse).....yours is O-111 per the obverse.

Thanks for the info zeewool. Any ideas on grade? I paid $65 for it month or so ago and was thrilled - it grabbed me from the moment I saw it. I will certainly be looking for more CBH's for my collection.

Sorry slaufman, even if I had coin in hand, I don't know how to grade coins, but from what I have seen elsewhere, I think that you got a very nice coin for $65. I'll bet Moe or Echizneto or some others here could put a grade on that one for you.

slaufman, I really like all the detail of your LDS 1831 CBH! Echizento is the real Grade-Master but I would go with VF-35 with great EF details Obverse and Reverse. The downgrade from an EF-40 was because it looks polished to me (at least with your pictures). Then again maybe it was somebody's good luck charm and they carried it in their pocket during the Civil War! A real beauty and a great piece of history!

Thanks for the complement Moe. I agree that it has been cleaned at some point. The obverse shows more wear than the reverse and would probably grade at VF-30. The reverse is much better and looks to be around EF-40. So overall I would grade this coin at VF-35 also.

So sorry if this is out of line (literally and figuratively) But I just picked this up over the weekend at a show and felt like it would be a shame to not add it to the party. Now I dont know much about attribution, But the dealer I bought it from printed on the holder (O-101a R.2) Not sure what it means, other than die attribution, so I think a book is in order for me.

We are going to let you slide Ian simply because it is such an absolutely gorgeous coin. Very, beautiful, and your dealer did a good job with the attribution if you can see a die crack on the reverse through the bottom of 50 C. and another one at the top of ICA. If you don't see these cracks, it will be O-101 (R-1). WOW!! either way.

Both cracks are present, as you said.
Bought this for my type set.
Thanks for the confirmation!
