Any opinions on safes?I have a 500 oz. green monster and 16 oz.of gold bullion.I would feel better if locked up. Thanks

Can you post a pic of your green monster and yes I do approve of a metal safe but don't get one built into your wall get one on the ground and make sure it's a well known brand

I believe a "green monster" -- in numismatic terms, not the left field fence at Fenway -- is a box of 500 Silver American Eagles. Edited by ziggy29

There are some with a lining that can potentially harm your coins. Do some research into that before plunking down several hundered bucks.

yes a green monster is a box of 500 silver eagles, they call them the green monster because of the green tops on the tubes the mint uses

Safes can be an expensive initial investment, but resale is often pretty low. I'd check out the want ads in your area. I found my safe (an unused 10 cubic foot gun safe) on Craig's list for $300. You also may want to check out freecycle to see if anyone in your area is giving one away.

I have a 350 lb. gun safe bolted to both the slab and wall. I added shelves and it holds pretty much ALL of my coins that warrant safe keeping. OK...it is NOT fire proof as it has only a 30 minute fire rating at 1,500 degrees (F), but since my safe is surrounded by block and brick walls, well...I am okay with that. Gun Safes...they work great and hold a bunch of coins! Just keep silica gel packets inside to absorb any lingering humidity and keep it high and dry!  Edited by zakgold

Mmmm. Can't quit salivating thinking of all that silver and all those American Silver Eagles. Yeh, if I made that kind of investment it would make me want to buy a safe for sure. Sorry, not trying to scare you but you have obviously got this for an investment in your future and don't need some little punk breaking into your house when you aren't there and stealing your dream. Good luck I hope you find a safe that will protect that. I have heard through some research and similar posts that like another member mentioned some safes can harm the coins as well as protect them. |

I have a small safe with a good fire rating. I bought a steel gun case as well for about $250.00. I keep guns and some coins in there. I also advise using gel-pacs to control humidity. Mike
