Where are you finding these? I've looked for a few years, without luck. I find it hard to grade the steel-core 5c, but yours is better than most '53s I see. As to grade, I might guess at F-15.

Regarding mules, here's a Canadian site that defines what they are.

I believe what the OP meant by "mule" is that the 1953 NSF coin is supposed to have the far maple leaf reverse and not the 1953 SF near maple leaf reverse. This would make the coin a mule. The Charlton Canadian Coin Guide has all 4 version of the 1953 five cents varieties listed. There is a Mule variety for both the 1953 NSF and the SF. The NSF mule coin is the Near Leaf and the Mule for the 1953 SF has a Far Leaf. The value of the mules (2010 Charlton) 1953 NSF Near = $850 VF-20 and the 1953 SF Far = $400 VF-20. For more up to date values...check the trends.

Very nice find and congratulations on the awesome coin. I would love to have one to fill my space for the variety.

As for grades...I'm definitely not the person to offer a opinion on that. I would however...be sure to get it slabbed. Sure wish I was the one posting this coin for others to drool over.

Have a great day.

It's a beauty Gord.
Kind of hard to grade with the photos but I'd say it sure looks better than F-15.

A similar coin just went up on colonialacres ebay page. You can follow the auction and see (for a price idea).

Thanks for the comments all.
I found both the 53 far and near mules in grampa's collection.
they weren't know when he died.
I went through his nickels and pulled them out.
Ill keep my eyes on the ebay auction Rodime ,thanks.
I will eventually get my mules slabbed ,but for now
I will just ride and enjoy them...

The one you posted a week ago is the shoulder fold version (easily distinguished by the straight I's on the obverse). The one in this thread is the no shoulder fold (the I's are flarred).

Yours is the common version, the one above is the rare version (some people call it a mule - I don't know if it is a mule or not).

Interesting. It seems clear that when they moved from NSF to SF, they also did the reverse change of FL to NL.

A pairing of an old reverse with a new obverse was inevitable. Perhaps the reverse change occurred later, and the first runs were the old reverse with the new reverse. If that was the case, you'd be right, it wouldn't be technically a mule, but a scarce variety. But, why the pairing of the old obverse that was being retired with a new reverse?

Is there any die pairing info for these "mules"?

There are six NSF NL on ebay right now, including an MS-63 for $3000.

That would seem to be a MASSIVE number for even a "very scarce" coin. How scarce can it be if there are six on ebay?
