Dollarization is the phenomenon of foreign currency circulating alongside or in place of a domestic currency. Most of Latin America is unoffically dollarized (U.S. dollar) and you can find US currency circulating thoughout. Ecuador and El Salvador are two countries that have officially dollarized--their national currency is the US dollar.

This is common for developing countries. Spanish currency circulated legally in America well into the 19th century.

You will get nothing other than 2000 and 2001 Sackies in change as NONE has been released into circulation since the 2001. Thats not saying it is impossible as many collectors, after buying their Sackies from the mint, will bust the rolls open to cherry pick the high grade coins and then spend the rest. I will add I am NOT one of them because of the premiums I (we) have to pay to get them from the mint. I might sell a few but don't spend them as I have no desire to take a loss on my initial investment. Quite honestly I would recommend everyone put together a set or two of the Sacagawea dollars while you still can afford to do so. Grit your teeth and buy the 2001S proof as I don't see it going anywhere except upward. And, most importantly keep those proofs PROTECTED as spot free, high grade Sackies will be a rarity in the future that collectors will be willing to fork over big bucks for. Time will tell!

East Timor's official currency is also the US$,but there are East Timorese coins denominated in Centavos, which do circulate alongside the US coins.

I recently received 10 Sackajaweas in change during a day of shopping in our little town.

If I ask for them at the baks or the credit union, the reply is "How many do you want?" They are glad to get rid of them.

I believe they are worth hanging onto. I've a complete uncirculated and proof set, and will continue to add to my collection each year for as long as they are minted.

The only reason I'm happy for these new dollars to come out are for two reasons

one-hopefully It will bring more collectors into the hobby
two- I'm think of buying them in proof and collect any I see and have fun
and three- I really want a dollar coin of Clinton on it

He is going to have to keel over from another heart attack first- none of the living Presidents will be in the series.

You don't even want to know what I think of either series, the Presidential dollars or the Spouses in gold. Makes my blood boil every time they are mentioned.

Terry:

You and I usually are 100 percent in agreement.

As you know, we are only 50 percent agreed on your statements posted above.

I too think the First Lady coins are silly -- more than silly. But, isn't the idea just for bullion purposes, or does the mint expect the FL coins to also be a cash cow?

I'm a little muddled about the Presidential series, can someone tell me exactly what the series will be on and how long it will run? Thanks in advance.

fengk, Some forum member will give you an outstanding run-down of what to expect. Although I have been excited about the series for a long time (former history teacher), I must admit not knowing all the details.

What I know is the new series starts in February of 2007, with four issues per year starting with President Washington. Size and composition same as Sacagaweas. Only deceased Presidents will be honored on the coins.

Main downsides that I can see is a lack of real artwork, and the use of the same thing on all the reverses (Statue of Liberty). Perhaps the biggest "bummer" is the fact they WILL NOT circulate. You have to get rid of the paper dollar, and the Government isn't yet ready to do that.
