Well since he counted all the coins individually, I do not see how that would be the case, unless he thought they were silver dollars or something. A case where a little knowledge can be dangerous I guess.

Sometime you win and in this case you won big. Maybe he has a very strong interest in that year.

Luckily buyers don't have to pass a test and so you shouldn't feel bad about what happened. This happens on ebay every day where buyers 'win' by out bidding everyone else. I just don't get it about some peoples approach to auctions. I'm a collector, but in my next life I want to be a dealer!
