if everyone feels like this when they find a discovery coin there is no reason the VAM hobby is growing by leaps and bounds

this part of LVA's letter pretty much mirrors what we all said on here Quote:The sample coin had proof-like fields without any trace of die wear lines. But a peripheral die crack all around the die would likely have caused early die retirement. The obverse die was an earlier die state than VAM 80. So this die combination of the new VAM 85 must be very rare to have gone undetected all of these years!

I didn't realize there hadn't been any new B1 die discoveries since 1965 so I guess I didn't actually grasp how special this coin was until I got the letter from LVA. I mean I knew it was special to me but didn't really grasp the concept until I saw it written down from the man who started it all. Now if I could just get NGC to add the attribution to the label and then add it to the B1 registry set I would be golden If you look at the VAM-85 page on VAMworld you will see Leroy saw some things I missed http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-85 I wonder what made that "7" in the leg of the "A" in states

Bryan, I am still amazed at the beauty of your discovery coin. I saw the already posted and attributed coin of yours on VW, I do not know what caused the "7" on the leg of the letter "A", except I truly believe this die exploded soon after your coin was coined and in an explosion ANYTHING is possible, just my "inexperienced opinion.".......PS, R-6 ?

I guess he had to estimate R6 but may be a 7 or 8 in actuality (in my dreams anyway). Now all we can do is wait and see how many more surface once the word gets out to see what the actual rarity is. Maybe all the other ones got melted back in the 70's lol. I would suggest anyone that had a PL or DMPL VAM-80 to look closely because I doubt the reverse die lasted long enough to actually make any coins without pl surfaces. The Obverse should still exhibit some pl qualities also for it to still be this die pair also especially if the reverse failed fairly early in its life

Is it common to see a coins rarity scale go up, because I have a strong hunch, your coin will be higher than a R-6. I know to you it is an R-20!!!

I don't know if the rarity scale ever goes up or not but even if its a R6 and only 1 or 2 more turns up in the next few years everyone looking for one will know its allot rarer than that. I don't remember ever seeing one go up but also can't say it has never happened. The B1 Reverse has allot of interest amongst Vammers so now that this is known to exist we should be able to get a general idea of how many are out there before to long. We know there has to be a few that was struck before this one was because of the state the die was in when it struck my coin and I think the consensus is it there were very few after this one was struck but there is no telling really, only time will tell

Suspicions confirmed! For all the new folks and many of the old here and on VAMWorld ... a new reverse on a 78 coin is like finding life on Mars! Congrats Bryan ... your hard work and knowledge allowed you to see this amazing coin for what it is. In the VAMMing tradition ... YOU SUCK!

Quote: In the VAMMing tradition ... YOU SUCK! I seem to be accumulating quite a few of those awards since last night. That is two words I never thought I would hear aimed towards me from a fellow VAM enthusiast. Quote: For all the new folks and many of the old here and on VAMWorld ... a new reverse on a 78 coin is like finding life on Mars! Yeah that was what I was trying to tell my sister when I had to call someone after I got the news, Its not like the other dates, the 78 has allot of interest in them because of all the different things that were going on at the mint during that time and how many different reverses actually came out of the mint in this first date of issue. Then you take that and add it being a B1 Reverse where there was only 7 die marriages known for 45 years every VAM collector can just about see one from 10 feet away and tell you what VAM it is and to find a die that no one knew even existed is HUGE. Of course she didn't understand a thing I said but at least she tried to act impressed because she could tell hoe excited I was by the tone of my voice
