I believe it refers to the 0 (zero) in the date. I may be mistaken, but I think they were all minted in Philadelphia so large or small "o" does not refer to the mint mark. As far as what variety of large "zero" that you have, I am not sure, I don't have a RedBook in front of me. I know that Susan knows a lot about bust halves, so you might want to wait for her to come along.

It's a little hard to tell the Overton variety without the coin in hand because a lot depends upon some measurements. It looks to be a large 0 variety (yes that is the 0 on the date). Large 0's are 2 3/4mm high.

I think I have it narrowed down to either an O-120 or O-121. Both of these have the same reverse (Reverse R). I'll outline the specs for each below and then maybe you can identify it.

On Reverse R, the 50C. is 1 1/4mm. The space between the second A in AMERICA and the arrow head is 3/4mm. The left side of the T (in UNITED) is in line with the right side of the I (in PLURIBUS). The letters in AMERICA are evenly spaced.

O-120: On the obverse, the stars are well struck but all have blunt points and are close to the milling (edge). The date is 8mm, large and close. This variety has a rarity rating of 1 (common).

O-121: On the obverse, the mouth is open. The stars have medium sharp points. The date is 8 1/2mm, The stars on the left are usually flat. This variety has a rarity rating of 3.

I could not find any other varieties that worked with the reverse. I'm very sure of the reverse on your coin. I don't know why you were offered so much for it. I would grade it VF25-30.

The only large letter variety that I could find is an O-114 which has the L Reverse. The large letter variety is a rarity 5 and is worth quite a bit. But I'm sure that yours is the large 0 with the R Reverse.

Maybe these will help you. Here are photos of 1832 small and large letter varietys.

Like SusanLynn said, the large letter is worth quite a bit more in 1830.

Wow, Those are all very nice. She may well be the prettiest woman on a US coin. At least you can tell what gender she is.

I didn't check the reverses (Susan is good at these and I trust her opinion) and it definately looks like a 120 to me. The star to dentil arrangement is just inconsistant with 121 and looks right for 120.

Either way if someone offered you $500 for it you should take it.

Did you figure out why he offered so much? This post sounds like you did.

BTW, Cave_Troll, thanks for the compliment. I still have lots and lots to learn though.
