"figure alot of tellers are young trying to hold a job while in school. ages 20-24 in the banks around here.
That means they were born around 1987-1990 Can't blame them for not knowing about coins that have been out of production before they were even born or not used in general circulation."
well I'm slightly offended by that remark, but it'll pass. I was born in 85. of course we can blame them. who's responsibility is it to know our currency and our history if it's not ours--and especially theirs? those who refuse to learn about our history, economy, and currency are creating for us all a generation of slaves. any further than that is a discussion for a different time, though.
one word for anyone who thinks it's difficult to learn this stuff: wikipedia

Many years ago I was a Policeman and while on duty walking into a 7/11,( OK, no jokes here!), the teller stopped me and said some kids just came in and payed w/really shiney quarters that she thought were "counterfeit"! I asked to see them and then just said,"tell you what, I will buy them from you, take them off your hands!" I walked out with over $10, face value of mint/like new quarters from the 1940's and 1950's. Sure that someone is missing their coin collection........but no report ever filed!

I still love going to the dollar store and buying things with one dollar coins and halves. Their expression. "What is this? Play money or something? Leave now." I still laugh at the fact that they were mad at me.

This one isn't coin related but a story of a dumb store clerk anyway. My brother and I went in to a Fannie May (semi-fancy chocolate store) and he asked for a half pound of fudge. She filled up a little box and it was ~0.8 pounds. He told her that he'd only asked for half of a pound. She looked all serious and said "But, fudge is heavier." We just exchanged looks and bought the fudge.

These are GREAT stories. I haven't had any experiences like this, but I have gotten funny looks when I try to spend the Presidential dollars. They take them and look closely and ultimately accept them, but there is a real reluctance.

maybe people in my region are just more stupid on average, but I've got so many of these stories it's ridiculous.
i payed for gas with like 60 halves weeks ago and the guy first thought they were stolen and then asked me if 'i was sure I wanted to get rid of them, bc you know these things are rare right?'

Funny stories. I recently bought Presidential dollar coins and a US Savings Bond from a bank. The teller (a 20-something gal) got nervous because no one had ever asked for either one of those items before. She had to call-over the head teller. You'd think they would try to familiarize themselves with all the products customers may ask for.

I love living in an old town, means old bank tellers. Oh the stories they tell.
They all know their stuff, just glad none of them collect. Had one at a local bank save me a 1909 Wheat, she called me and said...I have something you want a 1909. I was like, thanks! Haha. To bad it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but wheats still make me happy.

Bank tellers are not coin collectors....but you would think they would be trained on all american coins and currency!

Quote: You guys have some dumb tellers. When I go and dump my rolls of halves, those young girls get all giddy thinking they might be about to score them some silver. I stopped by the PO on my way the bank to unload some halves. The woman working there got all excited when I paid for my postage with them. I asked if she wanted more and she said YES. I went out to the car and came back with 6 full rolls.....she thought she won the lotto. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA >>>sorry, already searched<<<< ...but I didn't tell her that.
