I found this coin at a local show and the dealer let me have it for $4.00, which is below melt at the current silver price. The die crack through PLURIBUS (and the bargain price!) made it pretty attractive.

Looks like a couple more cracks on the eagles upper and lower right wing as well. The one looks like it starts at the top of the wing and runs all the way to the bottom.

That is an area of inherent weakness on the rev die. Occasionally, you can find one with a crack running up the leading edge of a wing with another on the leading edge of the other wing and the two cracks overlapping at EPU. Your coin looks like it was not too far away from that stage.

Wow, that sure is interesting.

I never understood the hype about die cracks and die gouges and die clashes or whatever, to me it's damage. I see a couple of lines on the back of a quarter, I know some of you are into this sort of thing, but honestly, what's so interesting about this?

I find it interesting because it's an aspect of the manufacturing process that creates the coins I/we collect. By posting this coin I've already learned something: there is a typical pattern of deterioration for the reverse dies that creates this sort of crack. I'll remember that and be watching for it the next time I'm trolling for silver Washington quarters. Maybe I'll find an example with a more extreme crack caused by a terminal die state.

I wouldn't pay any extra for this sort of feature but it is still of interest to me, and worthy of posting in the Modern Coin error/variety section, IMO. To each his/her own, right?

That's cool, you're free to collect whatever you wish. Nothing really extraordinary or interesting to me, but if you like it, that's all that matters.

nice little crack. Not worth a premium but i'd sure keep it in my collection. And you know other people would call that a 'half moon around the eagle' error and list it on ebay for $1000.
