All,

Saw this on The Royal Mint web site.

http://www.royalmint.com/store/Brit.../UKKBBU.aspx

I like the idea but wonder what others think.

Personally, it seems to me that The Royal Mint is about as overpriced as the US mint. 8 pounds is about $16. Most bimetallic 2 pound British coins are worth $5 Unc., maybe a bit more BU. Even if the BU price is double the Unc., that's still only $10. Unless the middle is silver, but I don't see anything to indicate that it is, then it doesn't seem worth it, to me.

I'm not really into coins that have a lot of words and nothing else on them. The actual lettering is nice, but the 2009 coins was writing only along with the 2005 50p.

I do like the other £2 coin, the mary rose, I think the boat is okay, but the lettering and old style border make it a little more classy!

Have you seen the WWF coin, no, not wrestling, but wildlife, I like that a lot more, though it'll probably not be seen in circulation.

Silver girl, you can buy all 13 coins, for £25 which is $40 at today's rate. That is all the normal circulating coins, 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, three £1 and three £2. So you can buy just under £10 for £25, so each coin is up 2.5 times its normal value or something like that! Buying each individually is quite expensive!

I think The Royal Mint needs to get some new artists / designers.

I do know this. For this year's £5 coin they asked for a portrait. The guy who designed it did two portraits and one other coin which he slipped in for the heck of it, they chose the other coin.

This year's £5 coin is a portrait. 2008 had a prince Charles portrait. You get the theme?

It seems they stick with what they believe is successful and seem to be afraid of choosing coins that might be a little more artistic!

Oh and a little bit of irony, the day after we find out about the 2011 coins, prince william says he's getting married, so there'll be another coin for that!

The worst kept secret of the 21st century!
It had already been murmured that the mint was preparing designs for a commemorative £5 coin to celebrate the nuptuals next year.

Do you think they'll have a picture of kate being chased by the paparazzi with william pretending to be george and the paparazzi being the dragon, sort of classic soveriegn style?
