Quote: Got word from PCGS this Morning: Questionable Authenticity
I'm a little mad that I paid that much for something I already knew. Did I not send it to them to be authenticated? Why can they just tell me questionable authenticity? Is that not their job to figure that out?
I don't have any more answers yet but I will be on the phone trying to see the difference and what it all means.
Reactions would be appreciated. No photos yet but I will post them when I get them. Well, I'm glad you asked. Seriously, that's not right. You ought to get your money back. I'll tell you why they do this, though, it has to do with their guarantee. If they were to attribute this one as a genuine silver and it later transacted as such in the market in reliance on that attribution and then that attribution turned out be wrong, they'd be facing liability. Still, as you said, you didn't pay them to sit on the fence, and they do hold out to the public as though they know what in the heck they're doing. "Questionable Authenticity" means they don't know what in the heck they're doing, and they should be refunding when they make that call, by all rights, IMHO.

I think everything has been said and we have a sufficient answer.
If Hybes receives additional information, he can send a note to staff to have this thread reopened.

I heard from this person today via messages. Been awhile but this is the copy and paste of all the text from the message except I block out his real first name. My name is ****** and you commented on a thread a few years back called "1977d Silver Half - Call me Crazy" You were one of a few who were kind and had the right spirit about the situation. I am now giving you few the first announcemennt that it was a genuine Wrong Planchet Error. It graded out at AU-58 from NGC. I will be posting on the old thread next week when the slab comes back. I just wanted you to know that kindness does not go unnoticed. Thanks ****** Hey that would be great news and of course I wonder if the "drop test" brought it down to AU58 from a mint state grade. Just saying, I wouldn't do a "drop test" on any coin. I handle all my coins carefully by the edge and avoid even breathing on them when they are in between my fingers and outside of a holder. We shall see soon I hope.

He sent a Note to Staff asking this thread to be reopened, and we obliged. But let me offer this warning... Do not post anything that will earn you a vacation. I other words, be nice, be patient, and stay on topic.

I just read through the entire thread. Very exciting stuff! I can't wait to see some more pics. I'd also love to hear what happened with this half dollar over the last year and a half.

... Call me crazy, but if I had this coin, I would have had about 47 hours before all my hair was pulled out, then I would be at the post office and off to PCGS she would have gone!! Basically, I would have not been able to stop myself from spending $30 to have her graded for as long as the OP waited. By the way: AWESOME story here and I can't wait to see the pics to come Erik

Most excellent that it worked out in your situation, hybes. Am glad you stuck with it and now have this resolved and certified. What's next for this coin?

If it turns out to be real I'll be the least surprised person here.
I never understood why there was no response to my pg. 2 post. In a nutshell if the edge is silver colored then it's probably fake and if it's grey it's probably real.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
