Large coins are more subject to damage, even to bag marks from the minting process.

So I would suggest looking at halves. Does not matter if they are clad 40% 90% or whatever. If you are taking coins from circulation, the rarest ones are those in pristine condition. And getting a half from a mint roll without ANY bag marks is truly a rare coin. MS65's don't normally occur in circulation.

I pull Australian 20c and 50c coins from circulation, and I only manage to get one or two perfect coins each year. It far easier to cop out and buy an uncirculated mint pack that has select coins in it. These are available from Post Offices in Australia.

Does the U.S. Mint use the Post office as a selling agent?

Canada Post does what Sel is implying, only in Canada. Mainly it's collectors' sets and colourized coins.

I've found that the coins that interest me most get the biggest returns....simply because I enjoy looking at pennies, I find good stuff. I have huge amounts of silver but never search for anything other than key dates..the interest is just not there. And if you're gonna do it on a regular basis, you better enjoy it.

Two words: dimes! IMO, best of all worlds. Silver, variety, and consistency. Been searching dimes for 3 years....hundreds of silvers found, proofs, Barbers, old silver Canadians, mercs, errors, etc...half dollars would be next in line, due to the bulk silver content, and possible variety, then errors.
