Luster is caused by the movement outward across the face of the die by the planchet metal. The really tight flashy luster is from when the wear is tiny. As the wear increases the luster becomes more and more subdued. Finally the wear becomes visible to naked eye and you see a satiny or even an orange peel surface and if it keeps continuing and getting larger you get what you see on this coin.
