The coin is a weak struck coin., not a terribly weak struck. wear on the cotton bolls some on the cheek and neck and lower hair..a beauty for the OBV. but the reverse has more than a wear, than a typical weak strike. for example If the reverse was such a FLAT STRIKE why are there details in the left(viewers left)Talons.. One would expect a flat strike would show flat talons and legs.. on both sides.. Not BOTH being FLAT , and IF this were so.. it would idicate WEAR.......AS so many coins exibit.. IT COULD NOT BE MS....BY THE RULES....yet the ANA allows such things. and I agree.......How ever this is the crux of this post..... As so many have already been graded....to these old standards...one can not expect every one to turn in there OVERGRADED coins to submit them to such a drop in grading........ This is why there is this post....to gain a common ground and understanding....of the normal and the exceptions....so PLEASE STAY ON TRACK.....ITS NOT A BATTLE between who what or were..or opinions.....it s common ground that we have Identified as having variances......

Good advice Gene, I at times take on a both personal and emotional sense about things I am so passionate about, that said, I would suggest we post coins of the same year and mint as to keep things on a learning basis to help this topic on grading grow. Thanks for the wake up call, Mike...

Mike I have enjoyed all of the variances this thread has evolved into...But TRULY is getting way beyond what its supposed to be about...Thats whyI call all to come to a common ground, so that we can learn. not dispute, and as such a COIN GRADING CLASS as such as this could be...and by which is the intent..As we all come from all walks of life and experiences..let us join not DEBATE...so that those who follow can find some understanding...That's all I want...

What do you suppose occurs when a planchet is pressed between two dies that each have engravings of varying depths? Have you considered another use for a clash chart? Did New Orleans have the planchet annealing capacity of the other mints? Why did the dies not last as long at New Orleans as they did at the other mints? If you feel that the answers are irrelevant to 'grading' just tell me so, and I will keep my nose out of your class.... (no hard feeling on my part).

You are more than welcome to just jump right in at anytime rlcbj59.... ask questions.... supposedly, that is the purpose of the forum. When folks are posting, is the best time to ask those questions... if you simply read without asking questions, you will become confused.

If you have questions not relating to this thread, then feel free to start another thread based on your specific questions.... I will reply.... I may not know the answers, but I will reply... I do sleep and do other things, so give me time.

ok, thanks. I got my first Morgan about a year or so ago it's a 1896 & was in a sock in my dads drawer. It has pantina on it coverd obverse & reverse, no scratches, it has no mint mark so I asume its a P, am I correct?

It is okay.... you are new, and if anyone is bothered by it, they will get over it rather quickly.
