This is my first real effort on getting a decent shot of one of my Morgan dollars. Is this enough detail to determine what VAM this might be?

Probably not, even though your pics are good. 1881-P doesn't have any "standout" VAMs visible from regular pictures. For 1881, one needs to start with microscopic examination of the date for doubling/tripling.

I hope this is close enough, I'm not sure I can get much closer.

Here is the problem with VAMming, okiepb. That's a nice detail shot, but not enough to actually see some of the doubling you'll have to find to attribute the coin. Many VAMs literally require a microscope, or at least a strong loupe, to see. Worse yet, many varieties still have no publicly-posted images against which you can compare, and 1881-P is one of those dates which has big holes in the known data.

As a wild guess, probably a third of known VAMs are no better than "very, very difficult" to attribute in circulated condition, and 10-20% have no images at all for you to compare to. Your coin looks Uncirculated, and likely falls into the latter category. VAMming isn't for the faint-hearted.

well said Dave, many years are extremely hard to track down due to few
have noticeable clashing,s and such. it helps narrow most of them down,, as for the others a good scope or magnifying glass is required to see the subtle features....By the way your pictures are looking good,
