Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and looking for some help attributing this 1921 P Morgan dollar I have had in my collection for many years. I have tried myself but I can't seem to find a VAM that fits. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge! CM Edited by Cash Money 10/06/2010 10:17 am

it looks like a 16 berry type but I think we will. and I know I will need very close pic's of the coin. I enlarged the one you put up by 400 x's but they are fuzzy. and many of the 16 Berry coins are scribbles and very defined photos are needed. Divide the coin into 4th's and each photo should only be of the... top left, top right and so on.

The rim of the obverse looks wild in the lower left quadrant. Is this just the lighting or a reflection? The area around the 4th star to the right of the date is interesting to me because it appears that there is an intersection of two cracks on either side of that star. One going toward the portrait, and the other going toward the rim. I think that if anyone had ever seen this crack fest on a coin before, they might be inclined to remember it.

The crackfest made it fairly easy. In combination with relatively-rare clashing, it was easy to mine VAMworld for enough information.

Yeah, did you blow up the obverse and check out what is going on on both sides of that 4th right star Dave ? WOW.....
edited to add:
And what about the doubled denticles ? Is that just a reflection or the effect of lighting glare or what ? I have seen this exact thing on CBH, (for real) and I am still lost on what it could be. (I will try to lift a photo from CU for illustrative purposes).

I never even noticed the denticles until you mentioned them, Zee. That's either a lighting artifact, or very interesting indeed.

Because they are not my coins, and the owners are not forum members (as far as I know). I 'borrowed' these photos on the assumption that the owners would not mind based on the reason for my using them.

Thank you all very much. Thank you also SuperDave. The die clash on the reverse wreath was the marker I was using to narrow things down but I couldn't seem to find an exact match. Your attribution looks right on. I don't remember the denticles being doubled so it may be an artifact of lighting. I will have to pull the coin out and take some more pictures as requested. There is definitely a lot going on with this coin. Some questions are: Is this a rare VAM? Is there any additional value associated with it? Should I have it graded by a TPG? Again, Thank you all for sharing your knowledge!

Cash Money, I'd generally answer "no" to all your questions. The true rarity of most Morgan varieties is far from certain, and this one is no exception. The VAMming community, although dedicated, is still very small. Most of the work is yet to be done. Hold this one. Don't spend the money on slabbing yet; even if it's the MS62-63 it looks in the pics, the value wouldn't warrant a slab. With that said, there's a whole lot going on with this coin. As VAMming matures and becomes more popular, this is the type of variety which will have early success due to its' striking features.
