A member wrote in part, "the only problem being that I couldn't show them on here without some people calling them circulated."
First what do you care what others say about YOUR collection,You have them because you wanted them. Secondly, Dave put it well, Don't show them here, and you can go to another site and have sheep follow your opinions along with you, where ever you go. This is a learning atmosphere, and as such people will question what they will, hence the term, "coin forum".
No dis-respect to you, but just how should ANY ONE take the statement you wrote? Besides taking a shot at members who do EVERYTHING they as a group or singularly can to assist people in learning and getting to the truth of things,That's what I am looking for but, Sometimes the truth hurts!! No soup for YOU!LOL.

Oh I don't think that any shots were being taken at anyone..... one of things that get in our way here (sometimes), is our lack of familiarity with each other.... For instance, I have come to recognize ocsjr2001 as one heck of a nice guy, a sharing person, a very knowledgeable collector, and I admire him for all of that, but the quality that impresses me the most about him is his very dry sense of humor.... his statement was an 'in general' truth, that could fit virtually any forum or setting, and was very heavily coated with sarcasm as well.... I like the things that he says..... he reminds me of Stephan Colbert... (and that's a good thing).

It would seem I owe "smitty" an apologize for the misunderstood comments made. I have since to addition of a key board, been misreading comments and as I have come to realize, things written, take on a completely different meaning than intended, why, because it is easy to surmise the intended meaning of others, when not actually speaking to each other, please excuse my misunderstood comments, You obviously come highly appreciated, Mike....PS, Soup for you!lol.

Is a coin that sat in a bag in a vault for 100 years truly mint state? Answer: Yes. Quote: Is its state in that bag the state it was in when it was struck or placed in that bag at the mint? Maybe, maybe not, depends on how much throwing around the bag received.
Answer: that bag could have had rough handling, but the contents are still considered uncirculated I don't care how baggy or beat up they look. Quote: To what degree is circulation measured? really good question. Answer: By wear on the high points of the coin, I listed these earlier. Quote: The definitions are different things to different people Answer: Not really. one could argue semantics but the definitions are clear and precise. Quote: The terms "mint state" and "uncirculated" are a measures of infinite extremes.... their meanings depend on how nit picky and eccentric folks allow themselves to become. To collect Morgan dollars one must learn to grade accurately. If one can't tell the difference between a mint state coin and one that is almost but not quite, you will spend (and waste) a lot of money learning this difference. This isn't a case of where a difference that makes no difference is no difference.

We all misinterpret Mike.... I am the guiltiest of the guilty.... as I don't even know what you guys are talking about half of the time (but that never stops me from lashing out as if I do know what is going on)... .... The difference between you and I Mike, is that you are man enough to admit when you have erred... I admire that, and wish that I could emulate, but pride is my enemy.

Grading is one of the most difficult things to master and as it has been pointed out quite subjective. If would be simpler if all followed the ANA standard but that sadly is not the case. To compensate learn to grade to a particular third party grading standard however a moving target that it is.

Zee, We all had to go through this process. None of us were exempt. The things you pointed out are what most people starting into the hobby think.
