Really surprized that photos are sllowed. At all the coin shows I go to photos are not allowed of any kind. Way to many crime problems. Such photos capture who is collecting and/or selling. Some photos could be taken over a shoulder at a check or credit card. Really suprized about the ability to take photos there.

I always thought that you could get your best deals at a coin show.
Depends. Usuaally the larger the show, the higher the prices. Remember that those dealers at that show usually are there for days. This means renting rooms, eating out, bringing family, Paying more for table rentals, etc. All such expenses are tagged onto the prices of coins. Also, the larger shows usually make you pay to get in. If you drive there you must pay to park too. Your food and drink prices too are more than normal. From my experiences over many years of going to large, medium and small coin shows is the smaller the coin show, the cheaper the coin prices. Most small coin shows are attended by local dealers so traveling, rooms, etc are not an issue. And too for the collector, most smaller ones do not have entrance fees or parking fees. One of our every Month show in my area usually has from 80 to 100 dealers and prices there are really normal and sometime unusally low. Many of the dealers from our local coin shows tell me they like that FUN show since they can make way more money there meaning they charge more for the same thing.

But, that's also why I took broad photos from a distance and didn't focus on any given table or dealer. I was just trying to capture the magnitude of it all.

Quote: Oh, by the way, Wizard was there and I asked about Verdi-Care and they told me I had to order it through their website. What's up with that?
Whoa....thanks for that report! I sent them a special shipment just for the show too. I even included a bunch of cents with verdigris on them for folks to test at the show. ARRRRGGGGG Or, maybe they sold out? The last couple of shows they did it sold out quickly. Did you ask them anything else about it?

I went to the display where all the Nic-A-Date and other chemical containers were, looked all over, couldn't find it. I asked the nearest sales rep if they had any and she told me no, that I needed to order it through their website. She didn't hesitate. She knew exactly what I was talking about. So, I didn't really pursue the conversation any further.
Keep in mind this was on Saturday and the show opened on Thursday so maybe they did sell out. Let's hope so!
You can see their "area" in the third pic I posted to the right in the far background. They had a pretty nice space.

Well, it's awesome that you asked for it! I appreciate that! I'll find out the scoop soon enough when I talk to Wayne (the owner). He has some dealers that buy it from him at shows and they may have helped cleaned him out faster.
HAHAHA...yea, I can see their sign in the third pic...cool.

Maybe she didn't hesitate because she was tired of being asked over and over!
But, she could have said sold out.

scooby, I saw Verdi-Care there, it was there at the end of the day on Sunday, too, as well as the test cents.
i asked the teen behind the counter with the wizard hat on and showed me to at least a 2 dozen bottles of the stuff.

Cool. I wonder why the girl told me they didn't have any? I looked around and didn't see any. I wanted to make sure BadThad was being represented!

just carl, Thanks for the explanation. I never thought of it that way but it does make sense.

If you go to coin shows constantly you get to know dealers rather well if the shows are constant and in the same local. I have really struck up some friends of dealers and from what they mostly say is the larger the show, the more higher the prices of everything. Not sure of rhe FUN or other really big ones with items other than coins but as an example the Red Book at one of our larger shows goes for about $12 compared to one really small show where I get mine for $10 and that is the hard covered one. Small show table rentals are also less in order to attract dealers. Also, I've seen in the real small shows they are usually held in Hotels, Motels or siilar places and some complimentary refreshments are there too. At some large shows dealers are even charged for electrical usage and that too is normally free at the smaller shows. One real interesting thing concerning large/small coin shows is at a large show the dealers basically don't care about you since the chances they will ever see you again is dim. At those small shows dealers are local, some have or work in coin stores and really want to get to know you. That too gets you some real good deals.

I see that now. That would explain why I was seeing better prices before the big dance. And makes a lot of sense.
I certainly didn't go wrong waiting and finding out. The local guys are still here, I'll just be a little bit more loyal back to them (as if I wasn't already). Only now, I don't have to go the lay-away route!
Yes, there were people from all around the country. Some of them wanted to write my credit card number down, take it back home with them, process it, then mail me the goods. Another no-brainer!
We have those small "motel" shows here, too. Now that I know what I'm up against, I can start filling some holes!

Great photos and commentary Scooby .... thanks for starting the discussion. My limited experience with 'large' national shows mirrors yours .... I have attended the previous 3 Baltimore "Whitman" shows ..... perhaps not quite the size of the FUN .... but certainly the same order of magnitude with all the big name dealers. I have never purchased a coin at this show! I run into my 'local' show dealers and their prices are higher at the "Whitman" then they are at the local hotel shows ...... I ask why .... making a living with the big show expenses. Anyways .... big shows are fun for the shock and awe value .... and I'm sure there are fair prices for some hard to find things ..... but .... for me .... I'll stick with my local 30-dealer hotel shows for my main purchasing. David
